American serama thread!

Hi everyone, I need your advice. last time I hatched chicks, it was summer and hot here. This time, I'm setting up the incubator well ahead of time. I had a really bad hatch rate the last three attempts, so I want to do all I can to be stable and correct. I think I have the humidity correct at 35-40% and should be able to get it as high as I want during lockdown by removing my blocks.

This time I wanted to err on the side of coolness rather than warmth. Right now my incubator day or night is staying steady between 98.7 and 99.3. Do you think I should stop messing with it now and call it good? Or is 98.7 just too cold? Thanks for your advice. These will be Serama eggs, so if it makes any difference...........?

Note, I have been very successful upping the temperature with a blanket on top of the 'bator, so if the temp drops around here (more likely to get hotter actually) I should be able to compensate with a blanket. And knowing how my 'bator is working, I should be able to adjust that way (with the blanket) pretty accurately, and will not touch this setting itself again once we start :p

Hey guys I have a serama brooder question!

I got a big old dresser and I want to make it into a brooder for my future hatchlings. I was thinking about putting one shelf in the middle to split it up and have new babies on top and bigger guys that are still too young to go into the run on the bottom. BUT I'm not really sure how tall the brooder roof needs to be off their little heads. It's a pretty big dresser, and these are such small birds I thought just maybe I could pull it off without it being cramped. What do you guys think?

BTW - thought I would share my new coop and run with you guys. Still a little bit of a work in progress but I'm so excited its able to hold the chickens finally ha. I'm going to build a second one of the big one and divide it in half in the next couple weeks to add more serama too, I don;t think I'll want more than 5 or 6 in the smaller one I have my pair in now. Too lazy to cut off the twit ties on the milk crates haha, I will take care of it saturday when we are out there organizing their treats and small supplies into the nifty little shelves from come of the crates.
(the towel is my temporary draft proofing , it's covering the chicken wire - DH has some ideas but this seems to work just fine for now)

love my little tin heater! such a great idea, thanks for sharing this!!!!

chicklittel from sunny southern CA. GO to the show, you will not regret it, chicken shows are SO MUCH FUN and you meet some of the nicest people alive at chicken shows!
But DO BRING A BOX, because there is always a sale area...and you never know what you might fall in love with when you are there.........

Oh...you're not telling me anything I don't know! Last month when I went I had no intention of buying but took my carrier "just in case" and came home with a tiny show quality serama cockerel--I couldn't believe he was for sale! The time before that, I ended up looking thru the garbage for a box 'cause I forgot my carrier and just had to have this little black and white mottled pullet. The only problem is, it's usually a 1-3 hour drive--nothing here locally--and I'm usually by myself.

My girl Springtime hatched 5 babies today, on day 22. I've been taking her nesting box inside at night but I guess the eggs still "slow cooked", with the chilly weather during the day?

Bheps Serama's ------ Even after the PO played football and kick ball with those eggs....
Harmony has 5 viable from them!! Its day 16 today!! I lock down on day 18 right???
I have some of her eggs in the incubator right now. I just did my first candle day 6 and I have 18 of 24 that look great. I had 2 that strted and died, and 4 that were clear. I think 18 of 24 is great.
