American serama thread!

This scene looks exactly like my yard everyday. My two runs are side by side and every morning my Brown/Red Serama (Fred) and my Buff Olive Egger (Oliver) face off through the fence. I also have my Alpha Roo, Spike, that every other roo on the property is scared of. A few times Spike has accidentally gotten into the Serama pen, and my tiny Fred has absolutely kicked his butt. Spike is completely terrified of Fred, it's hysterical, he runs frantically screaming, trying to find a way out!!

lol maybe I shouldent fret so much about them not being able to fend off the rest of my crew :)

Starting to get an interested in seramas. Where is the best place to educate myself about them and where is the best place to purchase them. Any help would be great.
Hello and welcome aboard. I read through a great deal of info and this site has some good info to get you started. I hope it helps. Its the SCNA.org there is a good amout of knowledge on here too. Check out some of the beautiful birds at OC Seramas they are very pretty and they post here. Very good info on here though Ikeep learning from everyone every day.

Well, I could get you started with a cute baby roo!!! As for research, 80% of what I've learned, I've learned right here. Because you're in Pa like me you would need to keep them warm in the winter. That's just about the only big difference between them and other chickens.

Hey folks! I have been wondering about my weather. lol I have Uno and his buddy inside and its suppose to be 65-70 tomorrow. I was thinking of putting them in a cage and putting them in my big pen for some outside time. They hatched on 11/26/12. I will bring them back in at night, but I just thought they might like some time with the big guys. Uno will have his own pen/girls when he officially goes out, but he will be next to my adult crew, so I wondered if it might be ok....or is it too soon? Give him a peek at his future neighbors. LOL

This is strange weather for us, but then last year our Spring landed early too and by the end of Feb. I was mowing the lawn here in TN. Today and yesterday were cloudy but 65 degrees and my pen is totally enclosed with a metal roof, so they would be safe. What do you guys think?? They are really wanting more room and I just thought it might be a fun adventure for them.

Thanks for any/all advice as usual.

hey guys- i need some suggestions- Boaz had some sort of seizure tonite, went limp, thought he was done for, now he is awake but can't stand? He sits and looks around?

Man! All this talk of tough seramas, I'm wondering if I just should have left my little Taco go at it with Kentucky my queen of the big girls, a large fluffy BLRW. She didn't like that Taco was eating her scratch off the ground and she went to peck him and he threw down with her! I broke it up immediately terrified that she would kill him. He got his comb ripped but you can't even tell now. I wouldn't want him to go against my new big roos though. The one is super sweet and would probably get pushed around but the older one I'm afraid would beat him up. Taco definitely has a Napoleon complex. The dog is terrified of him!

I'll have to try putting the serama in with some bantys and see if with enough work they can get along.

the thing to remember with seramas is they are teritorial- which is why you watch them interact to see -

update on boaz, he seems to have come out of whatever it was, i gave him egg and sugar and put him in a cage in the laundry room, he is walking, listing to the right a bit, and every time i walk by he chatters at me- sure would like to know what causes that seizure bit

So cute, are they all the same age?
My little Toy Boy just shy of 6 weeks tried to crow this morning. It sounded like a loud squeek of a sneeker on a gym floor!

Yah, I was also going to say your main problem will be the cold, but other than that, they're just like any other chicken :)
My faveorite pair having some supervised grub time

can you get some chicken wire and block of a little bigger a section? A cage sounds so small (but then I don't know how big your cage is, LOL) I think they would love it. I take mine outside a lot so they can fly a little (they don't go high, and never run away when I go to pick them up, which just makes it perfect to let them out in the backyard! It was only in the low 50's here today, and they did fine. Only problem was that I had to take my daughter to her doc appointment, and I totally forgot they were outside! It was dark and freezing when I got home, but they were cuddled up under a bush when I got home, and seemed just fine. Kind of asleep. I just hope they didn't catch a cold now!

Ugh, it was about 45 degrees outside! Freezing for us and gonna get down to 35 tonight supposedly, that means we're deep into winter! My blood is too thin! LOL, but I love it!

I don't know what one can do? But I'm so sorry to hear Boaz had a seizure! Is he recovering? Oh that's awful, I'm so so sorry!

I dunno, I wouldn't want to risk it! But it is kind of a funny thought. Sometimes attitude is everything!
