American serama thread!

I just thought I would introduce myself. I'm Jo from Gainesville, Florida. I went to the poultry show this past Saturday and absolutely fell in love with these little birds! I have 8 hens outside but because I live in a neighborhood, I can't have a rooster. With the Seramas I can IF he lives inside with his harem.

To that end and because I want to set things up right the first time, would y'all mind sharing your setups with me?

I did the same with some bricks, and haven't noticed anything too bad, but I think it's an individual thing where each bird grows nails and beaks at different rates?

I missed your reply earlier. I'm glad you think it's just an individual thing, that's what I was thinking but I feel better with others thinking the same thing, kwim, lol.

Welcome! You'll love them, they make wonderful pets. Easier to tame than parakeets and cockatiels and similar sized cage birds, imo. Quieter too, and beautiful. I just have mine temporarily, for winter, in a big cage meant for cats. Like this, pretty much although set up a bit different.

Well, folks....I am a frustrated Serama owner. I am apparently gonna have to restart my flock. I hatched six little ones on New Yrs Eve and got two with feathered legs.

I set up a test hatch with an egg from each hen and as of this morning....I have yet another with feathers on its legs. I love my little guys and they will stay here as pets, but now I am in earnest search for birds again. I am in Northeast TN. Anyone got some typey birds? I have decided to forego color at this point and get body type down. Then I will work with a color. My only request is that they not be white. We have a hawk that apparently has an appetite for the neighbors white birds. He "cherry picks" her whites any time he gets a chance. Hers are loose and up for grabs a lot too.

Mine are mille fleur or close to that, but again, most folks don't like to mess with that color. First I lost my favorite D'uccle this past weekend and now this.

Anyway....anyone near me that might have something available?

Welcome to the thread. We are neighbors...I am down in Brooksville. My guys are still young enough to be in their brooder. I use the big 55 gallon Rubbermaid containers. I cut 2 large holes in the lid and attached hardware cloth.

I have a gigantic coop about the size of a single car garage. It has enclosed sides all the way around and shares a wall with my shops. It has shelves and hanging perches. it also has christmas lights in there and two heat lamps if they want to stay in there. Unfortunately, the ground is still damp, even though there is hay and shavings down.

I keep really young chicks in my heated bathroom, then they good into a rectangular giant rubbermaid container in my bedroom. There they continue to grow and when big enough, they go outside into the big coop. I keep the big coop open during the day and closed at night when they turn themselves in. My little farm is also fully fenced to keep MOST critters out, although raptors and coons sometimes get ahold of a chicken or two-usually my best ones! I had a totally white chicken born with a dime-sized black spot on it's back. I have NO spotted chickens, so it was a mutation. A rapture took off with it.

our house is like a chicken coop in the winter... kitchen has 3 cages of birds, livingroom 2 cages, spare bath has boaz and the hens, and the art studio has a recouperating EE, her legs are weak after a bout with crd....

I just had to tell everyone that Gabrielle1976 is AWESOME. I went to the mailbox yesterday and there was a package in there from her. She had sent me a Frizzle egg, and a bunch of Button & Coturnix Quail eggs. I was completely surprised, and it really made my day. I am going to have the funniest hatch ever, because I've got 2 EE & 1 OE, 1 more Serama, and a Dozen BLRW eggs all going in at the same time. I'm so excited, and Thank You Gabrielle!!!

You lucky duck. I will say a special for you to get a good hatch and hope for a frizzle for you.

Welcome aboard! We have some people with some great info. You came to the right place. You will have to post some pix of your new birds. Love the Seramas and they are too fun to have around.
