I want to warn you that they love to take dust baths, so if you use shavings, and probably anything else, they will scratch and fluff and make a dusty mess! If you can, have high sides containing the mess from their floor. I would do as high as possible, like more than 1'. If I were to build one, and I'm thinking about it, LOL, I would make it tall with lots of perches to fly to, walk-in-able can be thin and long with only one side caged, the others solid. Or else still at least 2 1/2 feet tall and off the ground waist high with a large door for easy access.I just thought I would introduce myself. I'm Jo from Gainesville, Florida. I went to the poultry show this past Saturday and absolutely fell in love with these little birds! I have 8 hens outside but because I live in a neighborhood, I can't have a rooster. With the Seramas I can IF he lives inside with his harem.![]()
To that end and because I want to set things up right the first time, would y'all mind sharing your setups with me?
Thanks so much!
Luna, try just getting a new boy with great type. So many breeders have fantastic boys that just don't fit into their plans, but would be great starting points!Well, folks....I am a frustrated Serama owner. I am apparently gonna have to restart my flock. I hatched six little ones on New Yrs Eve and got two with feathered legs.I set up a test hatch with an egg from each hen and as of this morning....I have yet another with feathers on its legs. I love my little guys and they will stay here as pets, but now I am in earnest search for birds again. I am in Northeast TN. Anyone got some typey birds? I have decided to forego color at this point and get body type down. Then I will work with a color. My only request is that they not be white. We have a hawk that apparently has an appetite for the neighbors white birds. He "cherry picks" her whites any time he gets a chance. Hers are loose and up for grabs a lot too.![]()
Mine are mille fleur or close to that, but again, most folks don't like to mess with that color. First I lost my favorite D'uccle this past weekend and now this.Anyway....anyone near me that might have something available?![]()
Thanks for reading.
Oh my gosh, that's just so cute!
WELCOME! You are a smart cookie. I totally Half - A** all my preparations for just about anything and then always have some mega disaster because I'm so eager to get my hands on something!I just thought I would introduce myself. OHMIGOSH that is the coolest cage I have every seen! Where can you get your hands on that?!!? I need one for my serama to keep indoors!!!! I've NEVER seen a cat cage! And I work in a vet clinic inside a petsmart! LOLI missed your reply earlier. I'm glad you think it's just an individual thing, that's what I was thinking but I feel better with others thinking the same thing, kwim, lol.
Welcome! You'll love them, they make wonderful pets. Easier to tame than parakeets and cockatiels and similar sized cage birds, imo. Quieter too, and beautiful. I just have mine temporarily, for winter, in a big cage meant for cats. Like this, pretty much although set up a bit different.

Those are the single cutest baby goats I think I have ever seen! I have been BEGGING DH to let me get a pair of goats! Goats rabbits and chickens all go SOOOO well together... but he says I need a bigger yard... he's probably right, but I want a pair of Nigerian dwarfs so insanely bad I can't tell you how drooly this pic makes me
Awwww cute babies! I'm sorry about the prolapsed butt. Prolapse seems to be the theme of the week... we had two prolapse dog uteruses and a prolapse snake bladder at the clinic this week! But I bet his cute little butt will go away. Have you tried Preparation H? Even if it doesn't help with the actual prolapse part, it can be soothing to the birdy.I want to warn you that they love to take dust baths, so if you use shavings, and probably anything else, they will scratch and fluff and make a dusty mess! But frankly, I plan on making mine somewhat like that, only it will be on the patio. My chicks have made so much dust, I really don't want any in the house anymore, LOL. But on the patio, I can give them warmth, etc.. whatever they need

I have a question myself, I know it's a bit too early, but I'm worried that my one chick with a prolapsed bum is going to be a girlAnd I'm really worried about her bum. Does this look like a girl to you? These chicks are 2 weeks 2 days old.
When I look at this chick and compare to this one, this one actually looks like a boy to me??
They both seem hapy and healthy, but the first one still has a prolapsed butt and I don't know if it will ever go away! It's gotten smaller but still seems like it's sticking out. Should get a picture of that... I'll try to post one asap![]()
