American serama thread!

Woke up a few hours ago to find not only one, but TWO eggs have externally pipped! Today is only day 20, so the others still have plenty of time! I do have one question though. One of the eggs that pipped... he pipped in the middle of the shell. Do you think he'll be able to zip on his own? How long should I wait to assist if he shows no progress? I know they can rest for up to 24 hours after pipping, but how long should I wait after those 24 hours? I don't want to lose a chick just because I'm uninformed or scared to help. For now though, I'm just sitting on my hands and watching closely.

Day 20 is not that unusual for a Serama..they kind of show up when they decide to............

It can zip just fine in that position..........and don't forget, they stop to rest so it may be awhile............

As the chick gets into position to hatch you will see the aircell take a dip to one side. Many times we don't see this dip because the egg is already in lockdown. I would wait at least 24 hours before assisting

Okie dokie. Thanks for the advice guys! I hear peeping coming from a bunch of eggs, including the one that pipped in the middle of the shell. I definitely wasn't going to assist within the next 24 hours, especially if he makes progress on his own. It's just that he pipped smack dab in the middle of the egg, and it worried me a little.

Lol Mine was a peeper! she was a champ! the only one out of all the eggs i could hear from far away! check humidity! those pipped eggs could be causeng humidity to rise... and if you dont keep all of them, wait until they have some wing feathers... you might get some silkied in that bunch!

"Brookhaven" she hasnt started laying, but she stopped squating? i have a two and a half month old Bantam Lavender Ameraucana roo that i wanted to cross with her... i tried doing the artificial insamination, and i got some clear liquid to come out ( it kinda smelled like poop

(i didnt sniff it! i smelled it when it came out) and i droped it in my hens vent so she thinks she was fertilized...) hope this works and helps. her lay...

I'm wondering, since Hermione is hatching some of these eggs, should I put her in the brooder with the whole batch of chicks? Or should I just raise the chicks separately? I just don't want to upset Hermione, but at the same time, she is on her eggs with her "clan" 2 other females and a male.

If she wants to raise them p, you don't need a brooder. Serums are great mothers.

I would keep them in a hamster cage... I would let them out at least and hour a day to free range... NOT at the same time as the other chickens. When chicks are bigger, but still dependent on the mother. Reintroduce them all to the rest of the seramas. so that their mom is protecting them, but they are big enough to take a peck if fhey step out of line with the other chickens. Let us know!
