Does (super cutie) Peanut attempt to mate? Is he without sperm or is it a mechanical problem because he is too small to reach a larger, fertile hen? Asking because one of our little cockerels is tiny, and we are curious if he will have fertility problems. Is it an issue of weight? Any info you have regarding this would be appreciated.
I didn't know you could spay a bird! You must have the most awesomest vet in the state.
PEEEE-nuuut [correct pronunciation of his name to get him to talk back
] All he does is grab the hen by the neck. He does have a bum leg [was broken at the hock when he was a chick and never fixed] SO I don't know if that is the reason he does not go any farther OR the fact that he is so tiny... YES, you can spay hens [it ain't cheep tho
] You can also temporarily stop hens from laying with a DESLORELIN IMPLANT. I know of a few peeps that have done this, am unsure how long it last....but if you google you can find out.. Also there is a drug called DEPROVERA that stops the laying too.If you look around for an EXOTIC ANIMAL VET they are the ones that specilize in birds etc.... We are lucky to have two great vets here in southern CA.
As far as size and mating, there have been instances of banties mating with LFs and "hitting the mark" so physical size is inmaterial! BUT because of all the downsizing of Seramas in general, the sperm count can drop or the tetosterone level can be so low that they have no interest. It will be a crap shoot with you little roo, you can start telling him about the birds and the bees and maybe that will help.
