American serama thread!

Just picked this little 6 week old serama up today when i went to go get my cuckoo marans !! I am beyond excited !! First off how do they do with a mixed flock ? And since they are so tiny does she still need heat since i have her in the house and its about 70° in here ! And does anybody know what color she is ??

This little shaver looks completely feathered out so no heat is needed.
If she is the only "little" in the flock I would keep her away from the BIG-UNS for her saftey.
Color is any mans guess right now, as they will change more as they grow up
Guessing some sort of chocolate color maybe?

I am interested in Coco Pop and the Chocolate vs Dun/Khaki in the Serama. I have read conflicting opinions about which of those genes is actually in the birds. Has there been any clarification since 2011 when the Coco Pop thread was disbanded?

I love color genetics and am thinking about playing with Serama as there is SO much variety.

Also, when showing Serama, are there color categories or are they all lumped together and then judged by type with color as a secondary? Are there standardized colors and then an "other" category?
Explanation or direction to a good website would be great.

The only color that is recognized by the APA for in cage showing is white color. For Tabletop showing there are NO color lines, whatever you like.....

Yeah, for most serama enthusiasts type is what it's all about. I've not met anyone who works just with APA approved birds. There are lots of color projects rolling for that, I've seen folks working on mottled, birchen, wheaten and black, but it always seems to be because they just happened to have lots of birds of that color. Everyone loves a beautiful colored serama, but type is #1! If it's for breeding, pick shape over color. A bland colored serama is still full of interesting color genes and their babies might manage to surprise you every clutch!

I've not seen too much dissenting opinion about dun/khaki vs chocolate, I'm fairly certain it is chocolate. The big way to tell would be if it is sex linked or not. Put a chocolate roo over a black hen, and all daughters should come out chocolate, while the sons are just split to chocolate. Someone probably would have noticed and set to hollerin about it if they found their beloved chocolate roos were making unexpected results.

I have a sweet beautiful young duck that I'd like to find a home for and I figured I'd throw it out there to anyone on this thread that would like to trade for a baby serama. I'm not concerned with color or sex, it will be indoors & loved very much.

It sounds like Seramas would be a great choice for you. They have a lot of different diluting genes that gives color genes a different look. That seems to fuel a lot of debate regarding color but its a lot of fun trying to figure it out. While type is most important you just can't help but to get caught up in their color variety. I got my Pumpkin Coco Pop pair from http://www.lulinserama.com/ and http://jerrysseramasllc.weebly.com has great birds as well. Jerry also has a book for sale called "The Serama Colours" by Sigrid van Dort that really helps to understand Serama color genetics. I'm really enjoying the book it's full of valid information without all the negativity you find on line. They are little genetic marvels. Just dive in and enjoy all the surprises!

There are several facebook groups for Serama lovers as well.
