American serama thread!

Hello all! I have a Serama pair that have become mature in the past two months. I let them free range with the big girls, a polish, naked neck and barred rock. My roo is a very good provider and he is especially devoted to my Serama hen, they sleep together and follow eachother around. Only problem is, he mated with her when she first started to lay, now he only has eyes for the NN and Polish (especially the polish

). I'm guessing, the only way to force him to go for the Serama hen again, is to separate them? I'm hoping for some babies! Thanks everyone!

I doubt you have to worry about the serama hen's eggs not being fertile. Not seeing them mating doesn't mean they're not. I rarely see mine mating-only one egg hasn't hatched in the last two clutches; and that egg was fertile, but died in incubation.

I was just trying to tell her that (at least for me) in most hatches no chicks die, there is a lesser chance as they get older. Since there immunity and strength goes up with age. I think the main thing is that they have a heat source that is warm enough for them as they age.Sorry about your last hatch. If the chick hatched normal though I think it will normally be fine. Hopefully the next goes better.
yes that is very true. I only meant to let her know that its possible (Like Any other breed) That they will die.

I am on lock down day with 3 serama eggs, I started with 4 but one was clear, on day 12 or so I dented one(oops) I was hand turning and the sleeve of my night gown knocked the candling light on top of the egg. day 18 and it is still going (nail polished it) I have others that will go in different brood pens when hatched...

3 serama eggs are on the left one looks big, but it is the angle. the 2 eggs with red lines are Ayam Cemani, and the blue are legbar. the rest are barn yard. 2 of these went to a broody. She wrecked her own batch, but 2 of these looked like quitters, I gave'm to the broody just in case.(one was legbar the other was a barnyard.)

Good luck.

I have a name picked out for the first Serama..."Doodlebug" and the cracked egg? "Nemo" of course... If I am lucky enough to get 3, "Charlotte" will be the last egg.

Any updates on Porcupine?

Hi sorry.
Yes, she is doing great and her fluff/down feathers seem to be getting fluffier. I ran out of individual cages and had to go ahead and move out in the serama coop with my others (3 hens 1 roo). For and while say Hi out my rooster in with her alone in the hopes they would bind witch they did and that he would protect her from the other ladies. It worked well for the first day she was in with everyone but on day 2 I heard lots of scrapping going on and every time I would walk over to check they they would be fine. But on day 3 I could clearly tell porcupine was being picked on again. All her new (almost 1 and 1/2 inch) wing feathers had been pecked out again :( I guess cause that all she had and they curled so it was an easy target for than others to grab. So i pulled her out and put her in the broader pin with my leg bars, isbar, EE,RIR and silked serama chicks and she fits right in with them and everyone is happy and getting along wonderful. I 'll keep her separated and let her grow out more feather before trying her again in the serama coop. Also thought I'd introduce her again with the silkies serama chick and the same time and do it more slowly this time with a pin indie a the coop for a few days first. Other than that She is doing great and her color has improved after being moved outside from my laundry room.
I'll take picks tomorrow.
She does have several tiny new neck feathers coming in!!!
