American serama thread!

Hi sorry.
Yes, she is doing great and her fluff/down feathers seem to be getting fluffier. I ran out of individual cages and had to go ahead and move out in the serama coop with my others (3 hens 1 roo). For and while say Hi out my rooster in with her alone in the hopes they would bind witch they did and that he would protect her from the other ladies. It worked well for the first day she was in with everyone but on day 2 I heard lots of scrapping going on and every time I would walk over to check they they would be fine. But on day 3 I could clearly tell porcupine was being picked on again. All her new (almost 1 and 1/2 inch) wing feathers had been pecked out again I guess cause that all she had and they curled so it was an easy target for than others to grab. So i pulled her out and put her in the broader pin with my leg bars, isbar, EE,RIR and silked serama chicks and she fits right in with them and everyone is happy and getting along wonderful. I 'll keep her separated and let her grow out more feather before trying her again in the serama coop. Also thought I'd introduce her again with the silkies serama chick and the same time and do it more slowly this time with a pin indie a the coop for a few days first. Other than that She is doing great and her color has improved after being moved outside from my laundry room.
I'll take picks tomorrow.
She does have several tiny new neck feathers coming in!!!

Has she laid more eggs? New neck feathers-YEAH!

No no more eggs but the stress from being picked on could have something to do with that

Tho some of them are already bigger than her lol!

Speaking of babies, I give porcupine meal worm trets for protein. Can the babies have meal worms too? They are 2 and 1/2 weeks to about 4 weeks old

That's fantastic!!
You can giv them mealworms but I would suggest crushing them up so they are smaller.

This is precisely what I am trying to do. Unfortunately, with a very limited budget. But I am learning. We've bought eggs from so-called show birds and they were poorer quality than the eggs from pet quality. Live and learn. Now I know I should have bought from a reliable source. At the time I believed the source was good. Belonging to this group has shown me the folly of my ways.

I have saved your post to my desk top so I can refer to it as needed.

Aww thank you, I'm glad it was helpful! Sometimes I get worried I'm being too verbose, lol. When I get interested in a topic I start living and breathing it and seramas are my current interest.

It seems like most of us come to this breed with some bad or at least less-than-good experiences. I hadn't really done my research when I got into this breed. I started out just looking for a couple pets and ended up purchasing a local gal's "breeding flock." I was told about how they weren't extreme but fit nicely to type, how she'd showed them all and how they were all type A and blah blah. How she'd gotten them all from out of state because there weren't any good breeders in Oregon. Etc.

Nope! None of that was true. Maybe she showed them at some really local fair or something but definitely not show birds or show breeders. And it turns out that there ARE good breeders in OR, in fact one who's been in the breed really long-term lives just an hour north of me. But that's okay, as you said, live and learn.

They are really nice pets though and I will probably keep at least a couple in the long run and experiment with breeding them to nicer mates to see if I can improve the type from them just because I do like those birds so much. One thing I will say for the breeder who sold them to me, she did a good job picking out pretty colored birds and they were handled and friendly when I received them.

I don't know everyone else's opinion on this is but, I let my Easter egger hatch some serama eggs but then I took the chicks from her because of how tiny they were I was afraid of them being kicked or stepped on. They did get kicked out of the nest a time or two and that's when I pulled them.
So just keep that in mind. I know your possible bloody is a bantam Cochin but just be watchful and ready to pull them if you see any signs they are in danger. I'm telling you the newborns are just so tiny!
