American serama thread!

Sorry, two really cute cockerel chicks.

You know that's not what I wanted to hear!!! I have 1 more chick that hatched 1 week later so it is 6 weeks old. I have to get a better pix.

And 3 eggs ready to hatch this weekend. PLEASE NO MORE ROOS!!

So, nchris, your roos get along with each other? As it is even when I get the new coop & run finished, I may have to bring the dad inside for the night until I could let him out at a decent hour. I can't take a chance on the neighbors complaining. I'm on an acre but the houses are pretty close. Right now they're all house chickens

Rescued this silkied boy from near-death last night. I didn’t expect him to make it thru the night, but the little turd ball survived. I’ve threatened to wring his neck personally, on several occasions, but couldn’t bear to see him almost frozen, huddled in a corner all alone.
So he will probably be a house roo for a bit.

The extra good news is that he seems to have learned to trust me, after close to 2 years of running from me and acting like I was the big bad wolf. :D

What a difference a day makes.

Poor little guy!!!! How cold was it by you? Good work on saving him. I'm so impressed at how hardy chickens are in general.

I currently have a big house hen whose skin was torn by a roo 2 weeks ago. It looked like a wide, oozing wound but she was acting normally. I brought her inside & kept her clean with Veterycin spray. Because of the crazy weather she's still inside but wants to return to the coop. Everything is scabbed up and only about 1/6 of the the orig. size. Such a big difference.

My serama hen Noodle is outside in the heated coop/sheltered run. Wind chills have been below zero but the actual temps have been in the single digits. The water freezes by the end of the day, but I'm not seeing signs of frostbite. The silkie broody, her serama chicks, and of course our roo ,Teddy, come inside every night.

Speaking of weather. The kids enjoyed all the snow on Sat but it was too cold to stay out for long on Sun-Mon. Today it warmed up enough to rain & mist (about 32-33'F). Everything froze into solid ice as soon as it touched down. The balmy 30's and freezing rain will continue until tomorrow morning ..... then temps will drop again as we go into another period of single digits. Ugh!

They are pretty amazing sometimes! Glad your girl is healing up.
Weather sounds about the same here. We got down to 1 degree the other night. He seemed ok yesterday during the day, but I noticed he was kinda wimpy looking in the afternoon. He even let me pick him up, which is unusual. Then I found him in the corner by himself. Today got up to 40ish, tomorrow to be even warmer, then back down we go. This is not my idea of a fun Roller coaster. Lol

I also have a weak/thin BCM pullet inside, trying to fatten her up. Not finding anything majorly wrong with her except extremely underweight. She’s gaining each day now.

Is she molting? I have a molting laced orp hen who seems on the thin side. I'm wondering in my case if she's not eating enough because she's separating herself due to the prickly feel of pin feathers. I've noticed that behavior before in other birds when molting.

She isn’t molting. She has always been a loner and behind the other girls. When I rehomed my flock, I kept her and one other pullet (moves them in with my cream legbars for olive eggers). I just found her laying on her side one evening, I thought she was dead. She was like dazed! I can’t really find any issues with her other than being skinny. I see her eating all the time, so it’s very odd. I’ve been tube feeding her and she eats all day long. But I’ll keep molting in mind. I’d hate to see her molt in this cold, but maybe it’s upcoming? :idunno

The roos get along fairly well; some squabbles. Others don't get along at all. Winter-we've a number of house chickens at the moment: A serama hen in the bathtub with three chicks, a cuckoo maran hen with 9 chicks in the whirl pool, a tub with my smallest trio of serama and another serama rooster walking around the kitchen. A favorelle rooster a common visitor to the kitchen too. I'm glad I don't have to worry about complaining neighbors anymore; we moved to the country.

Going down to -6'F tonight. Brrrrrr (Wind chills below -20'F)
Teddy & Xansie + her chicks are in DD's bedroom. The little heater inside the "useless bantam" coop was switched to high last weekend, but this is the 1st real test. The waterer inside the coop was partially frozen by evening. I hope the OEG, serama, & other silkie will do OK tonight. I keep telling myself they'll be fine...... but then I feel like bringing all of them inside.

I took some pics of our handsome Teddy today:

The chicks will be 8 weeks on Sat.

Teddy is so stinkin cute! :love great pics.
And it looks like you definitely lucked out this time and got all girls!! :clap

Since Spicoli is still inside (doing fantastic, by the way) I took the opportunity to do a spur reduction on him last night. He will be 2 years old in a month or so.
