An odd cockerel. No hackle or saddle feathers a rooster should have. Not a rooster tail either.View attachment 1655347

Could be a Hennie. I have had this trait in OEGB, but very rare. Never saw a serama with Hennie feathering though. Cool!

We're supposed to get down into the single digits here in Tennessee. I plan on putting a thick coat of Vaseline on those birds that have large combs and wattles.

Hennie it looks like, but are they fertile. The brown pullet with him laid her first egg today.

Funny ad I just saw on BYC..... and so true! I have way too many house chickens right now!

My orp roo looks like he's got a touch of frostbite on his comb tips, but I know they'll be OK today and we'll be above zero in a couple hours. It's tonight with -28'F (-50'F real feel) that worries me. Tomorrow's high of -15'F won't be fun either.

I've heard that applying a layer of Vaseline on the comb and wattles helps prevent frostbite.

I didn't apply the Vaseline to my roos as the temps didn't get a slow as expected. It did freeze hard (20s), but my coop stayed well above freezing where the big combed birds were.

I only apply Vaseline (actually Bag Balm since it's thicker) to my orps when it goes below zero'F. I applied some yesterday. Yet, when it's -15'F or colder like the next couple days, there's not much we can do. In the single digits, I've never had any problems with my orps. They are made for the cold. I simply brought the bantams inside. (I wish I had a way of bringing them all in.)

Yes, bringing all of them in is difficult: I've a serama with three chicks in the bathtub, a cuckoo maran with nine chicks in the whirlpool tub, a trio of serama in a tub in the kitchen...sigh.... Hope warmer weather comes soon.

After seeing @nchls school little cockerel, it dawned on me that I have a young one also, that still doesn't have main sickle feathers. He is from one of my July broody hatches, so he's around 6 months old. But looking back thru pics, his daddy was slow developing his too!

And here's how much my dog pays attention to my current house rooster.
