I have had sand inside both of my coops and also in my Serama cage. There doesn't seem to be any perfect bedding, but this is pretty easy to clean. Sometimes I'll just sit on a stool in the coop and using a fine wire basket, I will sift the sand and have a chat with the chickens. It's very therapeutic!! I have found that my hens still like shavings in the nest boxes. Some of it gets into the sand but it can't do any harm and my hens are happier.

If you weight the option, the sand still way cheaper and easier to clean then the shavings, you don't get any poop stick on your hand or smearing all over when you cleaning...I do put a layer of sand on the bottom of my nest box with shavings on top to keep the eggs from rolling all over the place. To keep the sands clean from all the debrris and sanitize, I replace the sand every 3 months to soak them in bleach, rinse with regular water and leave them out in the sun to dry with the old ones then reuse them later on.

I was blaming my OEGB's for the noise, but they've moved outside now, and the crowing continues!! LOL. Like Gumbii said, it sounds like someone stepped on a 3" elephant.

I gave up my oegb cuz of the noise factor...

Now, I got a little serama with a crow like a banshee running around my backyard.

Why don't you guys use the grass after you mow and dry em???? I always leave one area of my lawn to grow tall in the backyard for this only reason just in case I don't have any shaving on hand, its usually takes 2 days for it to dry.

what's grass...???

i haven't had decent grass to mow since we got pit bulls...

SO THAT MEANS YOUR BACK YARD LOOKS LIKE THE PITS?????

LOL...

not like noah's ark... i'm just doing it wrong.. instead of a pair of everything, it's like a dozen of everything... i don't suffer from chicken math, it's animal math for me...

"oh, you want 80 for that one snake...? how much if i take all of them...???"

LOL, i have some OEGB that are a lot quieter than jose's seramas... especially henry... sounds like he needs a ricola lozenge or honey lemon tea in the morning... i'm sure the other chickens just laugh at him... but he's proud of his screech...
