American serama thread!

Why would anyone cut off a rooster's comb?!?

At the risk of sounding like a PETA freak, I have to say it sounds incredibly painful and cruel. Unless they have no feeling in their combs...?

It's kinda like traditions with docking tails on dogs or cropping ears. Just one of those things. I breed Jack Russells and show them, etc etc. I just recently took a litter in to get their tails docked at my work. Jack Russells just LOOK better with tails done:

JRT with a nice docked tail (Not too short of course)

Granted I LIKE combs on chickens too. I think a lot is matter of opinion.

i breed OEGB and i dub every roo that i have at 5-6 months... or at least try to... i love doing it and i think it makes the roo look great... people don't understand that it is their standard and there is no arguing because it is NOT going to change at all... but i get this all of the time... people can say whatever they want to say about it or me... and i'm just like... meh... so please don't start a huge debate on this thread... lets keep it open and running...

so... yeah... seramas are great...

I wasn't trying to start something. I'm new to chickens and had no idea it was a touchy subject. It just sounds awful to me so I wondered why anyone would do it...

Yeah, I've had breeds of dogs that standard calls for docked tails. They are hunting dogs, though, so the reason behind it is so that their tails don't get all bloody in the field from whipping around in the brush.

You get used to seeing the breeds look like that, so yeah, they do look better docked.

It's like docking a dog's tail or doing the ears. It's a "custom" I guess and far too many people on board to debate it. With OEG, if you want to show a cock, it's mandatory. That's the way it is, pure and simple, and would take an act of Congress, literally, to stop it. But, people have a choice and they do it or not. You simply don't show the bird.

That is precisely my reason for getting into Seramas. My kids first show birds were OEGBs. I LOVE THEM, they are wonderful little birds, but dubbing makes me queasy. THEN, I was introduced to Seramas, and all my problems were solved! My OEGB show rooster is now the King of the backyard, and we just show Seramas instead.
