American serama thread!

Beautiful birds,
i would take some of those culls too if you will ship to WA!

I have a question about color .
I have 3 Serama one is a black tailed buff hen one is a red jungle foul colored rooster 19 Oz .I know, he's big, loud and a bit too horizontal as well, but he's gorgeous and you get what they send when you have them shipped(I got exactly what I asked for, just hoping a little smaller) Anyway .
I have a small hen that is a very light tan color with dark markings in each feather, she's a nice bird and really small . She lays small yolk-less eggs.
the buff hen layed a clutch of about 18 eggs and the light tan hen sat them from the 4th egg on . 3 hatched several were infertile and there are still 5 left and I am pretty sure well over 21 days past lay. I decided to open one and the chick was well developed and alive but not ready to hatch yet. two days later an egg exploded. **/ PEEEEEW ! I really want all the chicks that hatch so I don't want to open any others but i really DON"T want to smell that again.

The question is about the chicks that hatched. They all look like the hen that lays the jellybean sized yolk-less eggs. She came with the rooster so I guess they could be closely related, but why would the buff hen - completely unrelated to the other two throw chicks of the other hen's color/ I know they can throw whatever but I would have expected a bit more variety when breeding to an unrelated hen .
Is it possible the little hen started laying good eggs after being bred? I'll try to post pics later when I get home. I should mention that the rooster does have some kind of red lacing on his breast, not much and very dark, almost imperceptible.

Should I just bury the eggs trying not to break any at this point . The one I opened would have hatched probably 3 days ago.
Thanks for the input . I am in Seattle area of WA in case there is a Serama breeder nearby I would love to have someone to trade birds/ mentor me/ go to shows with .

here's the birds in question and the chicksThe chick pic is at about maybe 5 days old for the older oldest one give or take . They have colored up even more like the little light colored auntie hen.

seen the pics all are wheaton . I would do one on one pair and switch the male to the other hen every 2 - 3 days that way all your eggs will be fertile . Next is when the hen is sitting on her eggs take the cock out dont leave it in cause they tent to bug the hen when she is broody .. That could also be the reason why not all your eggs hatch at the same time ...

Serama can throw any color and there isn't always variety in the mix. I agree with LA, the chicks will likely be shades of wheaten. They are more likely to be from the "black tailed buff" hen (that color is usually considered wheaten but you can call it what you like :)) as she lays the eggs with yolks. She is the same color as your cock. The reason they look so different is because wheaten is a sex-linked color. Technically only the hen is wheaten and the cocks are black breasted red or wildtype in coloring. However try to breed a BB Red, say, OEGB, to a wheaten OEGB and i believe you'll get wheatenish offspring with overmarked hackles. The down coloring looks similar to wheaten colored birds of other breeds at this stage. The chick below is a wheaten ameraucana. see the similarities between it's coloring and your chicks?

BTW you could candle the eggs to see if there are any more that are going to hatch. Just hold them up to a flashlight in a dark room and if you see anything moving around inside then let them be. If they are clear or have weird air bubble type things (not at the big end... that's the air cell) then throw them out or bury them. You can also try holding each egg near your ear and shaking it gently. If you feel a sort of flopping motion the egg will not hatch. If you hear peeping or a clicking noise (the chick breathing) then it likely will hatch.

great tips and color info !Thanks
I love it I prefer wheaten to other colors. Is that what the lighter hen is also or is there a different name for that color/pattern ? I have the rooster separated now except for some forage time together and he only bothers them for a few minutes and they let him know he needs to back off .

I have held them up to my ear and I hear nothing . I haven't shaken them though, I do tap at them but leery of them exploding in my ear so close to my nose ! I have tried candling with that I have available and have not seen anything but that was when they were new so maybe I'll give it another try or go pick up a new flashlight that's brighter. I would have thought LED would work.

It looks like one of the chicks is going to be booted!

And about the little hen is it possible a hen that laid yolk-less eggs consistently will suddenly produce normal eggs or is it a permanent failure ?

just candled them and found them all dark with light coming through the wide end. I didn't see movement or any definition except one egg had the wide end light with a trail to the pointed end that was lighted also. the shape of the light and dark patterns almost looked like the shape of a chicks head and neck folded into the body. No noise coming from any of them though. tThere are also some quail eggs I placed in the nest and they all show the same condition except 2 that were clear.
So are these eggs addled or are they viable ? wait a couple more days ?? I'm inclined to think the dark eggs have chicks in them does this seem right ?
