I everyone I am fairly new to seramas I have 3 pair and two lone roos.Two of my hens just went broody. Two of my pairs and one roo are proven show birds. I haven't had much luck incubating the eggs from them. My Avatar is my smallest A class roo. I am haveing a hard time finding hens of any color in florida.

Does anyone have free range Seramas? I know it sounds like a bad idea, but I have only lost one chicken and one Guinea in three years to predators. I'm thinking of free ranging seven chicks, along with their Cochin momma. The Cochin is a great mother as well as an experienced free ranger.

I let my little ones out to range if I'm home. Our property is fenced, and we have dogs, so I don't worry about daytime predators other than aerial ones. We do have hawks here, but the seramas (my big birds too for that matter) hang out in one of the runs (all are covered) or under cover of some kind when they're out and about. My serama don't range far out like my LF do; they pretty much hang out either in my garden or in one of the runs for the most part. Perhaps if I lost a bird (big or little) to a hawk, or maybe if I had $100+ birds I'd do things differently...or perhaps not. I do enjoy sitting down at our picnic table and having them run over to hop up on my lap for some lovin'...

Really interesting talk with a Malaysian breeder, he said this malay type the roosters are normally fertile and the hens only 30% fertile so I asked hi what would you breed to make more of this chick

I had assumed that with such a low rate of reproducing, they might use another 'style' hen. 30% is acceptable for breeding - he said that is why they are worth thousands of dollars, very hard to breed maybe only 2 per breeding season. so i asked what about the rest of the chicks, he said 'what rest of chicks - just the one' quality not quantity

yup only keep the best and forget about the culls ... or in other words the other rest....
