If they aren't laying they won't need a suppliment. If they are, then I'd give oyster shells run through the food processer or a good calcium grit for finches.

Have you ever feed them their egg shells? I've heard you can do that so I've been saving mine, but i don't know if its a good idea or not. Some people say you cook them first but others just crush it up and give it back to them it would certainly be cheaper than buying oyster shell.

I don't know how you're supposed to do it, but my broody hatched out some chicks, and before I could get to them the other hens had pecked the empty shells to bits and eaten them all. It was like they'd been given a yummy treat.

If you give it to them right away, they probably don't have to be boiled or anything, but I'm saving up egg shells for my girls, the eldest of which won't be laying until January. So I will boil them when we're closer to that point (trying to keep them dry at the moment so nothing starts to grow on them)

The reason to crush them is just so they don't think about eggs or egg shells and begin eating their own eggs. Not that it's bad for them, but because those eggs are meant for YOU! LOL

I save my egg shells and let them dry in a basket on a window ledge. My mom bakes the ones she saves for me. I crush them and add a little to the feed each day. If someone has a thin shell I'll add extra for a few weeks.

None of my broodies are egg eaters, but after their chicks hatch the egg shells disappear. So it seems to me that it is natural for them to eat egg shells.

I've got a question. Harry, my 3 week old chick is living with Sultan chicks. I wanted to integrate him into the cage with the 3 Serama chicks. Harry (probably Henrietta) looked SO SAD when I took him out of his brooder to put him in the other one with the 3 chicks. I thought he'd be happier, since he wouldn't get pushed around as much in there and could eat and sleep in peace, but even so I took all 4 of them out on to my lap, and Harry didn't seem to have any problems with the strangers, he still stared at me when I put them all back in the cage and while I talked to him, he flew back onto my shoulders/chest and obviously wanted back with his friends. Will he/she become super depressed if I push this integration? I don't want him/her to be so sad! He/she's my pet, not livestock :( I love him/her! LOL Want him/her happy.

I guess I'm being stupid, but I put him back with his friends...... Ugh!

Hello Folks
frow.gif

I am new to Serama's. I have a question, if you don't mind a rookie being....well...a rookie.

I have 6 eggs in the incubator and it looks like at day 9, 5/6 are trying to perk. I have read several different opinions of hatch dates and lockdown days. Normally, day 17-18 is good for lockdown due to 21 day hatches. But....some have told me that Serama's hatch early on day 19. My question is.....should I change the day I stop letting them turn? Is it true that they hatch 2 dys early? Or do I just do them like other eggs and hope for 21 days?

Thanks for any/all advice. Please forgive the newbie in me rearing its head.
