American serama thread!

They don't usually have a set time. They *might* go broody if they have enough eggs in their nest. You could put some fake eggs in her nest and see if she takes the hint, but because winter is coming, it might not work?? No idea??

Oh and a mirror would make her think she has a friend with her. Not sure it would work on an older bird though? But it might? Chickens get really lonely, and don't thrive when always alone :( They're social animals. Of course, if you keep her with you all the time, she'll think of you as her friend and socialize with you, but you usually can't be there 24/7 and they don't become less friendly when they have other chickens around them like other birds.

The mirror will make her think that she has another chicken in with her.

I'm sure if you got her a couple of serama hens she'd be happy and they'd get along.

Really?  In that case I might switch to building the indoor cage I was planning on.  They'll have to stay indoors with us during the winter then.  It gets down to 28 degrees here sometimes.  And there are only 4 of them....
I am in North Florida. Last winter it got down to 17 or 19 and mine stayed outside. I have them in an open air pen and just put plastic on the sides and put lots of hay in the pen. I piled it up around the roost and behind them so they were enveloped in the hay when they went to bed. They did fine. Grady Taylor lives 45 minutes from here and he has his in wire breeding pens and when it is below freezing he piles them in an unheated building overnight.
Of course....mine are grown birds!

My youngest serama chicks are 3 weeks, normal chicks I would have off of heat by now if they were being brooded inside. These guys still have a 100 watt bulb less than a foot from the floor and spend tons of time under it. They will sit until they pant before moving out from under it, lol. They really like their heat.
And, just cause I like showing them off, here are some pics.

Those are some cute spoiled birdies! ;)

I just love pics of the young birds, I especially like when people post pictures so you can see how they changed from a month old to full grown.

I put my 2 chicks out in the brooder in the shop tonight. I have it as warm as I can possibly make it for them, and they seem to be enjoying it... running around investigating things. I also covered the front of the adult bird's cages with plastic so maybe their body heat will keep them a little warmer. The low is 28 tonight, going by the forecast tonight will be the coldest night of the week. I'm so not ready for when winter really sets in. I've been trying to talk my husband into moving south and he wants to move north.. so we are at a stand still in the middle lol.
