American serama thread!

ok, I broke....at 6am, it was only 38 in the coop and low twenties outside. We had a huge frost and I couldn't stand it. They were bunched up in a nesting box and shivering. I pulled the light and brought them in and they are still in my kitchen floor. I hung the light above them about 3 feet and they are still bunched up under it in the corner of the cage. In a moment of hunger, they moved around a bit to grab a bite and a drink and I took these shots. I don't think I have posted them on here. I couldn't leave the little D'uccle alone outside, so she is in there too. They are all Mille Fleur colored. I will let the frost burn off with the coming sun and then try to put them back out in the run. They may become night-time house chickens. But that might make it worse going in/out with temp changes.

After a few moments of eating and drinking...the little roo (We call him Sargeant Major) found his voice and decided to talk back to my Yellow-naped Amazon in the corner. She repeated over and over...."Do you talk?" He crowed for about 5 times then decided they weren't speaking the same language and returned to his ladies and relaxed under the light again.

He had never made a peep until then. One hen is always playing in the water and was wet on her neck and belly, so she has stayed under the light trying to dry. She ventured out once to eat a bit of crumble but didn't take but a bite or two and then took a swallow of water and went back to the light.

the last shot is my little man. He is super sweet. He will follow me around in the pen when I am doing anything . He is very calm and easy to pick up and carry around. He is, however still showing some pin feathers, so he is still in a molt. Thats probably why he took the cold harder than the girls.

Ok, I will shut up now. Sorry for the gabby tongue. I just have gotten attached to these little guys and wanted to make sure I didn't lose them to the cold. Thanks for all the advice.
They are so pretty! Mine will be staying until spring inside, lol.
Oh my goodness, I love Mille Fleur! Do you think they'll breed true? They're all so pretty! Something tells me mine will be spending the winter in the house as well...?

Ugh, I really want a frizzle. Thinking of getting more eggs... Ugh! LOL
I wasn't looking for frizzles when I got mine, but I really love her lol. I need more eggs too, just not sure if I want more inside right now.

I'm sure once these ducklings are all outside I'll be breaking down and getting more though.

Supposedly, they should breed fairly true from the line they came from. I will find out in the spring (unless they start laying this winter. I think they are still a bit too young. The roo is trying, but the girls aren't exactly buying in.

I intend to do a test hatch on them to see how they do. I am hoping

Thanks for the compliment.

Serama hen, what's the story? You got your ayam kapan hen from your friend who had one hen and one roo? Then gave you the hen? Why did she want to separate them? Does she have the roo on his own as well? Or is he with other chickens? For all anyone knows, your girl may never go broody, so that could be a LONG wait. I don't know where you live, but if you have craigslist.org, you can search for a friend. Any breed you like will do, best if it's small though. A Serama, old english game bantam, or other bantam size bird should be ok. There are often many roosters looking for a home. I really don't know what you should do, don't really know the circumstances, or how much space you have, etc...??
No my friend is in VA and she has a farm with lots of chickens but only 2 kapans 1 boy and 1 girl i couldnt take both because the rooster crows and people around me get upset so i just took the hen she is molting right now and my friend heard i was looking for a serama so she gave me her a close cousin but now i look at her and feel so bad i searched for so long and finally got what i wanted but i dont feel joyful when she looks so sad i wish you were near nothern nj i just want her to be happy any bantam would be fine

Hello all
I am looking into getting into the showing of chickens and breeding, but would like to know the temperment of these fisty little birds and how much can i expect to pay for a decent pair or trio of show quality?

and how hard are they to breed?with good results..?

would japanese be harder ... just need generic temperment and good opinions on the breed.

I'm sure I will be as well. I'm kind of worried that I might not get a rooster (of all things!) My Harry is now Harriett. I'm sure she's a girl. And the other 3 chicks I have are only 2 weeks old, but there's something feminine about them?? LOL. I'm sure at least one will turn out to be a roo though. Maybe blondie, she/he looks like she/he has longer hackles growing than the others?? But again, way too soon to tell anything :( Maybe I'll just save my money and actually buy a frizzle boy next spring?

That'd be awesome if you can get mille fluers, Lunar, they're such pretty birds! Maybe it'll be the next accepted APA color after black if they can breed true more than 50 % of the time? Let me know if you decide to sell any eggs!!

Serama hen, a lot of feed stores sell bantam chicks or even sometimes have fully grown chickens as well. By us, there is a feed store that has 4 big coops where they take in unwanted birds and sell them for 10-20 dollars. I'm sure you could find someone near you that has some small chickens, perhaps a silky? or an OEGB. It might take them a while to get used to each other, but once they do, they'll be much happier. 3 hens might be safest as if something happens to one you still have the others? But remember that you risk spreading disease bringing new birds into your home. so you'll need to quarantine.

lareynadenada, I'd LOVE to go, but can't :( Kids, school, life (building coops) ... ROFL, if you go, please report back everything you saw!!!
