American serama thread!

Is winter over yet?

I never cared for winter, and now that I'm a chicken owner I REALLY could take a pass. I've got heatlamps in two coops, it's at freezing every night here already. I am defrosting 5 waterers each morning at 7 a.m. and I'm hearing it's only just begun!!!

Good Grief!!

Which reminds me, from what I've been reading about chicken breeding, they don't often or lightly get in-bred. I mean, it takes like 30 generations of father to daughter/mother to son parings to see detrimental effects, as I understand it (maybe not completely right, but sorta) So I don't see the need to out breed a bird, unless you want to add other qualities such as a color not available to the breed, or different kinds of combs... etc... Am I missing something? I may have read a bad research paper somewhere along the way also, LOL........

This article was posted a couple days ago on one of the duck threads I follow. It does a pretty good job of explaining different breeding methods.

wow, what a roo! He is awesome.

OK....I am beside myself, folks. Today....I hatched my first Serama egg. I ordered it, so not off my own birds, but still.......It is so cute. I was worried, but this one has made it out. There are 3 more eggs in there that I am hoping are going to follow tonight/tomorrow. So any good hatching vibes are appreciated.

sorry I got the egg in the shot for any weak tummies...I just had to snap this. It landed in a perfect spot thru the window. And please forgive my eagerness...its my first chicken egg ever.

I have hatched other types of birds including the cockatoo in my avatar, but never a chicken. And I am loving this breed. So I just wanted to share. Anyone recognize the color or pattern? It looks yellow and black right now. Me and some friends have a pool going. Mottled maybe?? I am just glad it made it this far. I will take it, any color.

Congrats!!! When I hatched out my 1st Serama eggs I was so excited too. I had hatched out regular chickens before but never Seramas. The first batch I set hatched out 4 chicks. I was absolutely amazed because they were shipped eggs and had sat in the post office over a holiday weekend. It really is the best feeling in the world to know you gave life to these little itty bittys.
