Americana not laying colored eggs......

Ameraucana is the most misspelled word on this web site. Everyone misspells it.

Hawk is a really pretty bird

and I'm sure her eggs are delicious anyway.

My EE is due to start laying next month. I am hoping I will get green eggs, but it's not guaranteed.

The OP was asking why her pullet wasn't laying green eggs - it's because she's not a purebred Ameraucana. I understand how disappointing it is - I started with chickens and ordered "Ameraucanas," thinking I'd be getting those beautiful green or blue eggs...only to find that only two of my six laid green eggs. I've since learned, as so many of us have, that my birds are EEs. I still love them to pieces, and they are fantastic layers! Enjoy yours!

pips&peeps :

There is no such breed as an amer"i"cana.

What you probably have is an easter egger and they are a mixed breed.

There is nothing strong in this post. It is a statement of facts. The OP wanted to know why her bird wasn't laying colored eggs, and it's because it's an easter egger that can lay any color egg.

I have the same situation. My "Ameraucana" (as sold by the hatchery) that just started laying is laying a light brown egg. I really wanted some green and or blue eggs. So do any of the hatcheries sell true Ameraucanas that will always lay blue or green eggs?

To get a true one you are better off researching a private breeder, you can do that here in the Buy Sell Trade forum.... I had the same thing happen to me last year got white eggs from a EE that I thought well you know...this year I actually got an green eggg from a new EE

I have these hens how ever you spell it. To my knowledge there are two different breeds laying Easter eggs. Around the web there is a lot of confusion between the two. I have two of the A's LOL (not even willing to try..) and one Rhode Island Red. They hav all been laying for about a month now. So far the only color I get from the A's is a green blue and they started right out with a pretty large egg. I do know that these birds are supposed to lay a variety of colors but it seems that perhaps each bird is assigned a color by mother nature. My sister has four of the same breed and hers lay green and pink, The pink is the confussion as it is called pink but is really a very light buff color. I don't think there is anyway to tell who is who when buying chicks.

Hawk is a very beautiful little bird. Looks very much like mine. I don't see much comb on her. All my birds started laying at the same time the combe developed so watch for that. The other item of interest is that my first layer was laying for a week before I figured it out. I let them run in the backyard all day and they get in the bushes and that was where I found my first eggs. I have learned to listen as they have a very distinctive cackle when they are laying. It sounds like they are being disturbed. When i hear that sound I give them 30 minutes, check to see if they are off the nest and then go get my eggs.

The yokes that are more yellow have more omega 3 and less colesterol I am told.

Good luck your birds will lay soon.
