Hi Everybody! We bought 2 Americauna chicks the 1st week of June (along with 10 other chicks of differing breeds). All our pullets have started laying loads of eggs, but not a single blue egg! We now have 13 hens and get between 7-9 eggs per day! I do wonder if the non-Americauna pullets are molting, because most have bald spots. The Americaunas have no bald spots. Anyways, I am wondering if anyone knows if Americaunas take extra long to start laying. They are now almost 9 mo. and not a single egg! Thank you!

Hi there! I have Ameraucanas, and they do take a bit longer than some breeds to begin laying. The bald spots concern me though. Seems to me that your young flock shouldn't be old enough to molt yet. Are your Ameraucana's together with the other chickens with the bald spots, or separated from them.

First thing to do is look for parasites, but also observe their behaviors to see if you've got a couple of chickens (maybe the Ameraucanas, since they're fine), that are pecking the ones with the bald spots.

At any rate, sorry for getting off track there.....you asked about the Ameraucanas and mine took probably a good five weeks longer to begin laying then the others.

Oh, those first blue eggs will be so exciting for you!

Good luck!

If you got them from a feed store or a hatchery, they are Easter Eggers. You have to get pure Ameraucana's from a breeder. Feed store and hatchery varieties are a mixed breed.

Anyhow, yes, they can be slow maturing. Now that you posted this, I'm sure you'll get some eggs.

Thanks for the reply! We got the Ameracaunas at a store--that prob. got them from a hatchery. So, you are right about them most likely being mixed breed. I'll be treating them for parasites this week (just in case).

My true Ameraucanas and EE were 40+weeks old when they started laying.. Well worth the wait!! I get deep aqua blue, pale blue with spots and a pale mint green..

I have 3 that were born the 1st of May, one started laying in Nov and the other two just started within the month, the last one just one week ago. They were the last to lay of the many different varieties we have! I think you'll see one soon.
