🚨Please help ! 🚨Our RIW has been smelling like ammonia and has lost 2 lbs , she is normally a 5 lbs chicken, but is now 3 lbs. She's very weak and her comb switches between pale and normal color very frequently. She's sometimes distancing herself from the rest of the flock, but not a lot. She's usually our most friendly chicken but lately has been very skittish. We've checked her for mites, and have been giving her nutrients. Any ideas?

Oh and she is usually puffing up and hunched over, not very active.

Current photo of what she looks like now along with her vent and poop may be helpful.

I assume the ammonia odor is coming from the vent?

When was her last egg?

Feel her abdomen for float or feeling of fluid - between her legs below the vent.
She may be having some reproductive problems or some organ dysfunction, hard to know.
I'd offer her fresh water, see that she's staying hydrated, once she's drinking, then see if she will eat for you. Check her for lice/mites, consider getting a fecal float to see if worms are contributing to her decline.

Hi! Thank you, we just realized she had broken a toe! We are splinting it now. Still not sure about ammonia smell. She did have a prolapsed vent in the past, so she has always had a little mess back there, but we clean it.

I'm glad you figured out about her toe. Ouch!
I've never had much luck splinting a chicken toe, it still turned out crooked, so now I just let them self-limit activity and let it heal on its own. As long as no bone is sticking out, then usually it will mend nicely.

The ammonia smell if it's still there, I'd investigate that a bit further. See that she's staying hydrated and get a good look at her poop. She may have just gotten soiled or poop stuck to her feet or feathers and there was an odor.
