While researching the safety of medicated feed I ran across a few articles about Muscovy ducks and coccidia... the articles say that Muscovies are more susceptible to it that other breeds of ducks. Not trying to argue, but has anyone every seen a study that shows medicated feed is bad for waterfowl? Or a necropsy report?

Interesting about the Muscovy. I think because everyone was told it would harm their ducks and there is no complete study one way or another it's just easier to avoid it. I'm personally use flock raiser till they go on grower and then on to layer. After the links you gave in addition to my own readings I don't see anything wrong with medicated feed and waterfowl but I'm not going no to speak for everyone since this is a debatable topic.

I read the monthly reports from the CAHFS labs and have seen reports of a few vitamin deficiencies, but never one about thiamine deficiency. Been meaning to call them and ask about any cases they might have seen. Thanks, I'll try to read through some of them. Since you send a few birds to UC Davis, what kind of program do they have? It's great that they are close by.

They will also let us use their fedex number to save on shipping. Last one I shipped was 13 pound box and it cost just $20. They start by doing a gross necropsy the day they receive the bird. From that they try to determine the cause of death, then they do the histopathology and run cultures and sensitivities and other tests. I usually get three reports emailed to me, one for the gross necropsy, one for the histopathology and the final with the cultures/other tests.

I was afraid to open my bill from PA.state ..because I saw the price list for some of their tests on their website running to hundreds of $$$$

Total Cost $40. plus shipping.....reminds me I have to pay that, yikes.

Didn't ask about using their shipping #.

They were personable, helpful and just great about all my questions!

I knew what to do thank to Kathy's posts

Exactly! Having one done on this duckling enabled me to save the lives of a few more ducklings, peachicks and chicken chicks.


This duckling did *NOT* have wry neck, it had a yolk sac infection.

Sadly I spent several hours off looking for the various vitamins that people recommended to treat wry neck and by the time I got home it was very near death. Necropsies in CA are free, so sent it to UC Davis the next day and the report stated that it died from a yolk sac infection. Both of the bacteria found were sensitive to Baytril, so maybe if I had started it on antibiotics the moment I saw it was off it would still be alive.

On a positive note, I've had a couple others that were looking iffy in the same way, so I started those on Baytril and was able to save them.
