Conversation with the spouse, "Wish I wasn't working today, the feed store has black copper marans available this morning."

Spouse, "Why do you need them?"

Me, "They lay cool really deep golden brown eggs."

Spouse, "Does that make the eggs taste any different?"

Me, "No, they are pretty. I also want some Cayuga ducks. "

Spouse, "Why?"

Me, "They lay really neat colored dark gray eggs".

Spouse, "Does that make the eggs taste any different? "

Me," No they are just pretty. Same reason I want some Runners (blue, green eggs) and Easter Eggers (blue green eggs). and......" I stopped talking at that point as I was getting "the look".

Spouse has not concept of why I need pretty eggs in my life...

But I want pretty eggs!

LOL! I am so lucky dh "gets it".
Although, Cayugas only lay one black egg, then the rest are a washout of gray... which is still neat, but it's the ducks themselves that are beautiful enough to keep.... seriously those glittery black feather like green and purple satin... GORG! I have a little trio and I adore them.

Marans have a practical side though too.... they are fantastic meat birds, and that usually wins hubbies over on them ;)

LOL

Thankfully, my dh gets it ... but more because he likes the baking I do with them

Marans are great! Super calm and docile, large, nice eggs and color, and you can mix and match varieties and keep the dark eggs if you shop through good breeders. I have a Wheaten, Blue, and a Splash.

Thankfully my husband is a Leo so I only need to say "Because they're rare and fancy" and he's game for it. The Saxony ducks were an easy in. He wants Cayuga though, he likes that shine they have.

My Maran is the most skittish of all my girls

I wasn't necessarily after different egg colors at first with my flock. I was just after the coolest looking ducks. But I am so glad we adopted the single cayuga. Now I have some working on hatching, so hopefully she'll get a couple cayuga companions.

Remember: in Duck Math, bantams count as half a duck. So you could get a trio of Black East Indies (mini-cayugas) and it's only half a duck! Black Silkie ducks also lay the same color egg and are also a bantam.

I love the look of Marans eggs. I'm working on convincing my boss to let me hatch some for her. It's a win-win, my incubator stays full, I get to watch them hatch.... and then I get to see them every day, but without having to pay for feed.

I've somehow corrupted my hubby. He's insisting we keep this duckling and that duckling... and he wants the trout runners and the white runners (we just hatched the penciled he wanted) and the saxony and the.... you get the picture. He keeps telling me he's only going to build one more duck enclosure and we have to limit how many ducklings we keep... but then he wants to keep them all! He built me two hatchers. Which one of us is the addict and which is the enabler?
