Yes, technically, it is illegal to open someone elses mail....Maybe God and Santa has given the Postal workers power of attourney to open their mail and answer it. Honestly guys, this is what life is all about doing unselfishly for others.

for the postal crew that did this. What effort!!!! And Meredith will NEVER forget this, or God! HOW COOL!!!

I would like to know if anything is being done to reprimand this employee or if the post office will be more strict about enforcing rules in the future. Regardless of how you feel about this gesture, someone's private mail was opened and read by a stranger. If I went through people's mail looking for letters to read and respond to I would be dealt with harshly, regardless of any good intentions. This employee abused his or her post and, as far as I can tell, is getting away with it.

"Sweet," "cute," whatever . . . I'm amazed no one else seems to look beyond the surface of this issue. The post office has allowed an employee to violate people's right to privacy without any probable cause, and something needs to be done to rectify the situation.

What do you want them to do mail it to GOD????? Or Santa???? OH MY I have heard it all! Honestly, if someone allowed their child to write this letter, secretly they would be hoping that the mail personnel would open it up and answer something back, I would think that! And if a stink would be raised the Postmaster would probably be laughing his head off at the ridiculousness of it all. This was not normal mail and think how CRUSHED this child would have been to find this letter stamped "return to sender address unknown" WOW that would have been a brick!

I would want them to use the return address (that they obviously had) and send it back like they would any other unaddressed mail, or if they didn't have that, they can see if there's anything valuable and if there's clues of how to get it back to me, but that's where their rights end. Any parent hoping mail personnel will go through their letters . . . well, I wonder about that. Bah, humbug me all you want, but this is serious and needs to be treated as such. I wouldn't want someone to break into my home, even if their purpose in doing so was to leave a bouquet of flowers. I know it's an emotional story, but if given some thought I know people will start to realize that this is not all it's cracked up to be.

I spoke to my grandmother about this, and she brought up some other good points. She rather resents the audacity of a post office employee assuming the role of God and sending a letter in his name. She also wonders at the parents for teaching a child that letters can be mailed to God; what happened to good old praying?

My mother only said, "What kind of creep reads other people's mail?"

It's hard to lose a pet and I think it was just fine that the mother encouraged her daughter to do what she felt she should do. I think that if you don't agree with it, you do not have to be a killjoy, just don't read the thread.

I actually think that's beautiful.

My kids wanted to write Santa letters this year. I didn't want to waste the stamps figuring the post office would just pitch them, so I had each of the girls draw very lovely stamps on their envelopes.

It was a huge surprise when the girls each received (different) letters from Santa earlier this week, even stamped North Pole, Alaska. They were addressed specifically to each girl. The only downer was that they were computer printed letters. But to their credit, they at least had someone put an actual Santa signature above the typed name.

I spotted the post here on BYC from Leslie about hand written letters from Santa. I'm gonna order two.
