An early pipper!

Yesterday as I was preparing for lockdown, I noticed one of my silkies pipped externally. About 6 hours passed, and the chick made a hole a bit bigger. fast forward 12 hours to this morning, and there has been no progress, but the chick will still chirp if I whistle at it. Today is day 19. Is it normal for progress to come so slowly? The temp did run slightly higher, so I expected a slightly early hatch, but I'm shocked that almost 24 hours has passed with just two tiny holes busted through. Humidity is at 75%.

Temperature during incubation could very well have a lot to do with this. I’ve hatched many silkies and will say that they tend to be weaker chicks. I would say that if it hasn’t hatched by now to take a closer look at the egg and maybe take some egg shell off to examine the inner membrane. If it is dry I would consider helping, but that is a call you will have to make.

The one that pipped overnight between day 17 and 18 finally zipped and is up and about! One pipped last night between day 19 and 20, and we will see where it is when I get home from work tonight! It was a beautiful all-white baby that hatched
