So almost all of my chickens have been laying now (just one needs to hop on the bandwagon,) and almost all of them get into the nest box.. Except one. There is always one sad little lonely egg sitting underneath the ramp into the chicken coop. Why is she doing this!?
There are definitely enough nest boxes, I've got two for six hens, so why else would she being doing this?

Maybe it's a very very new layer and she JUST CANNOT get back into the coop before the egg gets into laying position?

At least it's not all the way across the yard, or anything!

I don't know - have no answers for you - but you are not alone!

We have window "flaps" that open on the inside (I don't know why, they just ended up inside out). One of my little black bantys ALWAYS lays up there if I leave the one to the left of the door up - and only in a nest box if it's down! I can't keep DH from putting the flap up, so most days I find an egg from her, it's up there.

I asked her why she did this...but she wouldn't answer...you would think laying an egg up on a tiny little window flap wood be much harder than any where else...but I guess not...

I had an EE hen that was as rogue as she could be.......I stopped looking for her eggs in fact and gave up on the idea of her laying eggs in the coop. My kids always found clusters of eggs hidden in the cutest little spots.

Sometimes they just do it that way

Is she at the bottom of the pecking order?

She may need to do her business wanting a specific nest when it's occupied

You could try putting a shoebox with bedding at the base of the ramp to see if she'll use that, then move it into the coop if you have room after a few days.

I had one hen for several days in a row would go into the teenage coop and lay her egg. Anywhere she could find. After a few days she quit and went back to the nesting boxes. Never could figure out why she did that.

Atleast she's laying it on solid ground..
Ive got one lil hen who insists on dropping her egg into the ducks paddle pool!
Its been 4 days in a row now.
Ive moved the pool to a different spot, and Yesterday i even left it empty and i still found an egg in there. Silly hen.
I watched her do it today, she just hopped up on the side turned around, went to roost, and with no announcement 'plop!' and off she went on her merry way...

All i can say is chicken logic, is very different to human logic..
