An unusual simultaneous hatching!!!

ChickenCanoe - WOW!!!

Love them and if I'm not mistaken known over here as Buffons Macaws (Ara ambigua). Always liked them as find them similar in build to the Greenwings and an equally nice temperament. Our own Scarlets laid this year but were infertile but I think the male may be a little too young. When we move I'm going to put the spare male and pair in a big aviary with other non breeders and see if they re-pair.

Looks like it was an awesome project

Oh wow! We're planning on building an outdoor aviary for our harlequin macaw....they are tearing down an old prison just down the road....wonder if I can get their old chainlink fencing? Hmmmmm

Very nice flight cage Pete.

The great greens are known as Lapas Verdes in CR but I think it's the same as the Ara Ambigua or ambiguus. I think they're also called Guacamayo Verde Mayor. Don't know why multiple names for the same animal. Probably similar to local names or colloquialisms.
The scarlets are Lapas Rojo = Ara Macao

It's a breeding facility near the capitol where they raise birds for release into the wild. It's the world's largest captive collection of great greens (about 100). Native range is from Honduras to northern Columbia but on the verge of extinction. It takes years to certify a release site.

Here's one of the baby Blue and Gold Macaws from 2 clutches (same parents). The eldest are 6 weeks old and weigh approx 500gms and to the left is their day old sibling weighing 20gms with an infertile egg. For such large birds they are relatively small when hatched.

Pleased the thread's been of interest to you all and thank you for the comments (everybody thinks they look like little old men before they feather)!!

Awwww...such cuties...do they ever have identity issues? I read the book about Alex, the African grey, and he didn't seem to like other birds...kinda talked about them behind their beaks and such.

BTW, your...research articles? Monographs? have been so helpful, the past two months is my first time incubating and hatching.

Hi - I'm pleased you found the articles helpful

As the Macaws are hand reared then they are very tame but to avoid imprinting we rear them with other Macaws. This keeps them well adjusted and able to socialise as birds and eventually pair bond

I have a question for you about Macaws. I have a pair that is breeding. She laid 4 eggs, only one was fertile. She stopped laying on it and I took it away from her cause it was cold. I put it in the incubator. Did I do right? The baby will be a ruby macaw. Is it the same temperature for them also?
