Ancona Chicken Thread

Pics
Well, I'm going to have to go against the popular consensus and call your beautiful hen an Exchequer.

She's looks about 50/50 black and white, a little much white for an Ancona, which should have (at most) 20% of their feathers just tipped in white. Of course, everytime they moult, the white becomes more prominent, but she doesn't look all that old.

Compare her to these pictures:
http://www.premiumpoultry.co.uk/Exchequer_Leghorn.html
and http://gallery.alledal.nu/v/chickens/Wernlas-Collection-February-2005/The_Wernlas_Collection0064.jpg.html

There's
quite a bit of variance as far as light vs. dark with the Exchequer which I think makes them especially fun.
But don't leave the thread, we'll just call her an Honorary Ancona, until we can get you hooked up with the real thing.

X2, reason I asked how old she was.
she does have a little too much white and her comb needs to be folded except the first point here is a pic of a young Ancona and you can see the comb starting to fold in the back.

and here is a 1,1/2 year old hen ( at the time pic was taken ) look at her comb!!
and only time she has gone broody she is almost 3 now

Well, the girl in the pic is two years old. Nava, she looks a lot like the mini-me in your photo (what a neat little bird, btw)! Or I should say that mini-me looks more like the Exchequers I've seen.

WOW, tha 1.5 year old has a big comb. Interesting. They are beautiful.

Thanks for the input...

So I was told one of my chicks may be an Ancona. I got her from the assorted heavy pullets bin at the feed store (they get from Ideal)

Here she is as a little chick.

What do the experts think?

babyrnlc, my Ancona chicks looked just like that when they were wee bitties. you'll have to wait and see of course, but its a pretty good guess.

Are the Ancona's really flighty will I have heard that they can be tamed. I like these birds but don't like the idea of them being flighty. There is a breeder/hatchery not to far from me that sells eggs.

babyrnlc looks like an Ancona

har they are a fly-thy breed but I guess if you spend time with them they can be more approachable, hey people tame Killer whales why not a chicken

I just have them for the eggs and I like the color too, but when I want to hold something I go to the Orps or my Sebs, a lot easier

I'm glad to see so many Ancona pictures! I have a rosecomb hen and a rooster (don't currently have a pic of my Roo). I think they are very beautiful birds. I was also glad to see the picture of the ancona/leghorn mix- because that is what I have in my incubator right now and I was curious what they would look like.
