ancona ducklings

Cackle has excellent production anconas. But you really need to pick through to get any that are good for breeding.

A few years ago I ordered 75 from them. I raised about 60 to juvies and picked breeders from them. I only kept 2 drakes and 7 hens. Most were oddly marked, long bodies, runnerish heads, and small in size. (I'm really picky too which doesn't help).

But if you just want them for pets or eggs and meat, they are great. And very low in price!

Oh, and you will only get blacks and chocolates from cackle. They don't have any other colors (or at least I didn't get any)

I'm not looking to breed at this time. Just want healthy ducks. I like that I can order a trio that are sexed. If I get to the point where I want quality show type ducks I'll cull heavily and only breed those that meet what I am looking to produce. I'm ok with black and white.

Is there are SOP for them yet? The only things I could find where old threads saying that they were not APA recognized yet.

There is a standard written up for them though it's not set in stone yet as they are not a recognized breed. But there is a small group of us working on getting them recognized. This is my second year showing them just to get the breed out there and seen and they are VERY loved by all!

If you have facebook, look up ancona ducks. Theres a group there with those of us looking to get them recognized as well as many others who have this breed or simply like them and want to be a part of the group. Theres LOTS of discussion on what to breed for, what to breed away from, how to identify colors, etc. :) If you can't find it let me know and I'll PM you the link

I'll look for it today, thanks. I'll let you know if I cannot find it. Is it a closed group?
