I recieved my 5 breeds of hens on April 19th. 5 of each and 25 in all. Quite a small box that they got shipped in and they were peeping and sounded very discomforted. A relatively short drive home from the post office before they got introduced to the brooder we made for them. The heat lamp was on and the bedding was down. The water and feeder were all set to go! They all seemed so happy to get out of that little box and into their new play pen as I call it.
In less than an hour of drinking and feeding, they huddled under the heat lamp and collapsed into a much needed sleep. No two birds slept exactly the same. My Jersey giants stood erect and fell asleep with their heads slightly bent. I didnt know birds could fall asleep standing on their feet. My Buff orpingtons lay their heads on each other and just snuggled. The black sex links and silver laced wyandottes were the funniest as they buried their beaks in the bedding and flattened out like they just got run over by a semi truck. The plymouth rocks seemed to have no pattern at all and did a little of what all the rest were doing. The peeping ceased and I could have sworn they were all playing dead!
My girlfriend Rita grabbed my arm and smiled with a grin saying "And I thought you slept funny".
