Okay guys I’ve never had chickens however I’ve successfully raised three ducks alongside baby goats on our homestead. We went to tractor supply for dog food and ended up with 4 female (pullets?) chicks. What can I say I’m a sucker? So they’re inside in the brooder with lamp, bedding, crumble, water. I plan to keep them in the house until I get them down to like 70 degrees since Louisiana is warm then move the brooder to the goat area. They would still be separate and unable to exchange food. Have weather shelter and heat. Having said that, I have no experience with chickens and am unsure if that’s a suitable plan? I have a broody Pekin hen laying on eggs near hatching... would it be possible to sneak the chickens in? Will momma care for them or shun them? Also can ducks provide the waterproofing oils necessary to chickens?

I say that a lot when walking out of TSC.

Congratulations on your new babies. I don't know a whole lot about it but I hatched 5 ducks and bought 4 chicks. They brooded seperate for 2 months and all moved in the coop at the same time. They had a little bickering for a couple hours and then got along fine. I then bought 10 chicks at the feed store. They were about 4 weeks old when I got them and put the brooder box with them in the coop. After a couple days I let them out, it's been a couple weeks with no problems.

Thank you for sharing your experience!! I’m just gonna feel it out. I’m finding backyard farming is a lot of trial and error and all animals re different!!

I've never had ducks but I would not give it chicks, because she will want to teach them to swim, and that's not going to go well...

Your chicks are also likely too old to accept her anyhow.
