and THIS is how they treat our veterans?!?!

Unfortunatly, there are those out there that are perfectly health trying to get disability benefits they do not deserve.....maybe lasy is not the appropriate term, possibly just undeserving of disability benefits.
I myself do not want the government to fund these people when they are health....the fund needs to go to those truely in need.

I really, really, REALLY took offense to saying there are vets milking the system. One percent...ONE...of our population serves in the military. These men and women are coming home broken, battered, abused, and without proper long-term treatment. I know personally know many people's lives who have been destroyed by their willingness to serve and I have yet to meet ANYONE who is trying to profit off their injuries, PTSD, TBI, etc.

My husband is part of that 1% who serves. So were my grandfathers. So was my great grandfather. Until you leave the 99% pack of those who BENEFIT from soldiers injuries and selfless service, please do NOT speak on something you clearly know nothing about.

(((walking away from this conversation before a mod kicks me off the board for saying what I am *realy* thinking)))

ETA: Those of you claiming vets trying to commit fraud...are you aware 1/3 of our homeless population are vets? Have you ever even visited a VA hospital? Have you ever visited a Fisher's House? Are you personally trained in the long term affects and treatment of PTSD and TBI?

I was an Army brat, my brother and my father and my uncles , cousins, grandfathers all served......They will tell you that there are thoses who try to scam the system.

Can you be so nieve to believe vets are above this type of behaviour.

As I have said...it is ashame that those who truely need help have to jump through so many hoop, it is this way because not everyone is so honorable when it comes to getting money for free.

And yes, I have been to the VA hosp. and am trained in long term care....this has nothing to do with fraud.

I hate to tell you this, but they keep taking away more and more of the benefits we were promised while in the Air Force and now are considering doubling or tripling our medical insurance costs. It's bad enough only one doctor here wants to take TriCare health insurance anyway--I'm forced to go to him or go many miles away or move. Folks who have never been in the military need to watch what they say--if you don't speak from experience, you really can't say a word, sorry.
My DH got a piddly 20% disability from having back surgery-he had degenerative disc disease exacerbated by a fall when on duty on base. Later, because he managed to walk into the doctor to be reevaluated, they reduced it to 10%. We get NOTHING for that, nothing. They don't make us pay taxes on $123 of our little retirement is all he gets out of that. Big whoop. And DH has no disc material at all between some of the vertebrae anymore so it's only getting worse. We'll probably be moving to a flatter property with no steps closer to some doctors in the near future.

No, I am not NAIIVE.

I resent the implication that it is widespread. And I think anyone who works daily with vets knows the VAST majority are undeserving of their long-term, military related issues.

I think the point is there are so few people who volunteer to go into harm's way for us that the exponentially fewer who are scamming the system shouldn't be the deciding factor in lowering benefits for all of the vets. There are far too many in private life who are scamming the system, we should be more worried about them than those who have served us in an honorable capacity. As far as I'm concerned our vets should be given as much help and security as we can give them, they deserve nothing less.

I will hold strong to the my belief that any person who serves our country in the military deserves whatever benefits they can get. Healthy VETERANS is almost an oxymoron. If they are healthy and trying to get disability payments, who are we to judge that they are mentally stable.

Sorry, I just feel that if someone serves our country and stands by what this country holds valuable, they can have those benefits.

It is ashame that they are cutting benefits of those in need. I helped my dad get his disability after he retired after 30 years, it can be trying and difficult.

I think all seismic meant was that in general there are people who feel 'entitled' to things they are not....unfortunately even in the millitary. I don't think they meant it personally to anyone who has served. I can think of one person who was millitary that this applies to. He is lazy, and thankfully, he has gotten mothing from the millitary and maybe a more deserving vet will because they denied him. The attitude that just because he served he should forever get 'something' out of it is absurd. I think all the deserving vets would agree completely. There are always some who would milk the system for all it's worth.

That said, I do believe we should do better by our millitary personnel who are injured and can't do for themselves...if for no other reason than they did for us what we couldn't do for ourselves by serving us!! It's not called 'service' just to give it a cutesy name!!!! Unfortunately, the help comes from the same type system as welfare....and we all know where that is headed and where it comes from..... It is a shame, and it really bothers me that vets do not have enough when they have given so much of themselves.
