Let's not forget that they are HIS property.End of story. If he wants to actually raise his property in as cheap away as possible, good.Maybe he wants to use that money on his real family, not his animals. Not all of us can or wish to spend more on a coop then on our houses.
I had 25 chickens in a 24x8x7 enclosed coop for months, until I could get around to killing the roosters. When it rained it stank, most poop does. They were just fine,no disease.Id tell the man if the mexicans come onto his property again to deal with them permanently. Please remember ya'll have NO right to mess with someone else because he doesn't share ya'lls opinions,Let him live like he likes. Its not like he is locking his kids in there, you know real people.

Apply that statement to dogs and cats. We do have animal cruelty laws in place in every state. Owners can be jailed for not providing vet care for their dogs and cats. There is a certain level of care that is deserved. I'm not saying anything about this particular man, just making a general statement, but bad animal husbandry can and does breed disease, which in turn, can affect others.
Really, keeping things clean is not expensive, just takes some motivation. And coops can be built for free with salvaged materials. I did it. Trust me, I have no $$$, but I manage to care for my birds well.

speckledhen makes a great point. My coop was built with scrap materials. The most I spent was last year when I replaced the roof. But it can be done. Even a tarp above their heads isn't much to ask.
I am hoping that my son's friend, (both are 18) says something to his dad/guardian. I hope he lets them know how upset I was. But I seriously doubt that he will. As with most teens that age they are in their own world with little regard to the situations surrounding them.
Anyway, before this thread gets to heated, I would ask the moderators to lock it down, please. I did not intend for anyone to feel ill at ease by bringing this up. It just goes to remind us of what cruelty is out there, no matter how small. And as they say about opinions... everyone has them. If animals can't be kept in decent conditions the owners are liable. This man I speak of has to lay his head down at night to sleep, it may not rob him of slumber but I couldn't do it and rest easy. But I am a totally different story than he. I regard my animals as part of my family, food if needed. I take it seriously, the care I give them.

Exactly Ma'am. Dogs and cats are property aswell. The only kind of vet my animals see is either a shotgun, knife,or my hand.
Now please don't get my wrong I don't hurt my animals undeservedly, but i don't treat them like kids either.I use them just like I do any other tool.I use them in a manner to ensure their long term usefulness.
To condone this man or not isn't my place,I mean I don't even know him.I just advise to err on the side of caution, leave him alone. Not ya'lls property not ya'lls concern.

I sure hope you get those animals at least vaccinated against rabies, Byzantium. If not, that is negligence in my opinion. After my current dog is gone, I will have no others because I cant afford proper vet care anymore, thanks to this economy and a piddly Air Force retirement check. Can't care for them? Don't have them, is my philosophy. That said, I'm closing the thread at the request of the OP. Thanks for your participation.
