Animal cruelty? I think so!!

Oh, you were writing while i was tapping out a note to suggest you talk to the man. But if you already know your suggestions would be unwelcome, then you need another tactic. Can you call the local SPCA to do an inspection? What county or local authorities do you have there who might be able to charge him with animal cruelty?

Unfortunately I live in TN, which is a state that has a huge problem with cock fighting. They can't even put they brakes on that. It's terrible. I don't think they regard chickens in the same way they would 4-legged creatures. They anonymous letter is a good idea.

I would advise against turning him in. Judge not lest you be judged. 10 chickens in a 4x8 cage is a much bigger area than confinement birds have, although they should indeed have some shelter. You should either talk to him, or try to forget that you ever saw it.

Annonymus, your son and his friends relationship is also at hand. Life is tough enough on young ones, deaf ears, obviously not fully caring is the fact in the matter.

Like with my statement of people that have animals as property, its true, but not all people are like that.
As for Mexicans...perhaps they do go there and save the chickens. Save the chickens- regardless to how, perhaps his neighbors are hispanic, and they see wrong doing too.

Its such a sensitive world now, between intentions and comments, everything seems to ruffle someones issues, live and let live, I appreciate the hispanics as they will work for a living, not sit on their butts and expect to be paid to sit at the computer and play games.

I hope I didn't sound too ignorant! I should've said hispanics, but the 5 women I managed at the hotel refer to themselves as Mexican. They have never taken offense to me using the term. I do apologize to anyone who was ruffled by the comment my son's friend made.
I love all animals, I just can't help myself. I'm the proud owner of 40 peeps. My biggest thrill is sitting on the patio with a cup of coffee watching those colorful creatures pecking around in the green grass. It's such a pretty sight. I just wish those unfortunate peeps he has could experience what mine have.

This is off-topic, but if they are from the country of Mexico, then they ARE Mexicans. Just like if you are from America, you are American. The "Hispanic" term is used to classify them from Latin America, no matter the country. This is generally the more politically correct statment.

I'd feel the same way I feel when I see a huge dog stuck in a small kennelor on a chain, far, far away from any human contact and walking in it's own crap, with filthy or no food and water. What's the point of having a dog at all?
What is missing in our world is EMPATHY for living creatures that depend on us for literally everything. Sometimes, I wish I could lock the owner in a small cage with filthy food, black water and no toilet facilities so he could see what he's doing to the animals he owns. I just decided today to cut off ties with the feedstore I got my original birds from. The cages were full of the most foul smelling poop/moldy feed, bloody picked birds, etc. It made me ill. I had stopped to see about a particular feed, but after that, they've lost my business. I didn't go inside, just left (owner's truck wasn't there, so she was gone and wouldnt do any good to complain).

BTW, I would also prefer them to be in a stew pot than to have to live in those conditions.

imho

if you have such strong feelings on the subject, you should talk to the person face to face. maybe he had them free ranging until some came up missing and hasn't yet put together a coop and nesting box.

hard to determine the situation at a glance.

It is very sad at the conditions and reasoning that this person would keep his chickens but many people only keep them for the egg production and nothing else. I think that our chickens all live "the life" because they get to have human contact and free range like all chickens should but we cant save them all. I would talk to the person about his chickens. Ask what kind, what he feeds them, do they get to free range...ect. Be interested and ask questions that you would ask one of us. Just because they are in that cage he may want to discuss them and may love them a lot. When you act interested, many people are open to suggestions. If he says he is looking to build a coop and run, offer to help or give him places he can find scrap wood and wire (craigslist, freecycle). Tell him you and your son will make a day of "helping" him. If he refuses then i would get someone else involved. It could be a great learning experiance for his family and it would make you and your son feel better about the situation.
