"Animal Cruelty"

Apparently, you simply cannot make proper enchiladas using anything but a rooster. Who knew?

I asked some Mexican (not Hispanic-these were Mexicans) co-workers and interestingly, many of the men felt that eating a rooster would increase their manliness, if you know what I mean.

Who knew, indeed?!

Hispanic- its a lazy word used to group 600,000,000 people of extremely varied culture into one "group". Same with Latino. I think any American should at least make an effort to distinguish Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Mexicans from one another since, Puerto Ricans are actually American citizens, and those are the three most common nationalities of "Hispanic" one might find in the US.

You can't even accurately call "Latino/Hispanic" a racial group, because on the tiny island of puerto rico alone you can find nordic peoples, and african peoples, and even asiotic peoples, and they all share the same culture, and speak the same language. The wonder of strong patiotism and national pride is that Race and Religion aside "Somos todo boricua". We're all Puerto Rican. Boricua is what the old indian tribe called themselves. in modern times its still used by Puerto Ricans to describe anyone born on the island and therefor litterally native Puerto Rican.

Some commonalities though, most hispanics are catholic, most speak spanish, most families are machriarical, and food is a BIG part of the various cultures.

I could go on, but thats enough for this edition of KNOW YOUR MINORITIES.

Thanks for reading through that if you did. A lot of "Latinos" don't like being grouped together. Like calling Irish or Scots English. Each nation has its own culture and they're all rather proud of themselves.

This is an area that I'm close to... I have a friend who is a vegan. (She eats and/or uses no meat, no meat products, no leather, no wool) She is comfortable with my raising 'already existing' birds, but thinks that it's wrong to hatch up birds to 'exploit' them (egg laying) and/or kill them for meat. Her DH does eat my birds eggs, but if I was planning to kill my laying hens after they have finished laying, she would not allow it.

There are many PETA people out there that are 'beyond idealistic' and believe that animals are as valuable as people and that they should not be eaten, caged or bred. Basically, that we should only eat veggie's and let the animals be. All conversation about the necessary milking of cows, the chicken and turkey breeds that cannot continue to live past a young age due to their breeding, are lost on them.

The problem is that they cannot see gray, just black and white. They cannot accept a flock of farm raised chickens as being better treated. Not that they don't recognize that that is a better life for the bird, it's just that they cannot accept the exploiting and killing.

I have had soooo many conversations about this and each one has ended in me shaking my head in disbelief and her being frustrated that I don't understand her.

My suggestion is to steer clear of the conversation and do what you're comfortable with.

Heres a question. I've always wondered how many animals would go extinct if all people went vegitarian? I realize that alot of people keep barn yard animals for pets. I'm one of them.I do eat meat. But what about ranchers and hatcheries , anyone that does it for profit? don't most vegans press for spay and nueter? I guess the point I'm trying to make is,if they have no use,how many people will pay to raise and house them?

While I agree some what with the opinions of the last two threads. I must say to BIRD and THORN . READ THE RULES HERE!!!! The "P" word is not allowed in any post!!!!!

It has been far to inflamatory in the past and got many otherwise good threads locked. You may want to go back and edit.

I don't know about animals going extinct, but certain strains of animals and plants have been lost or are in danger of being lost due to changes in diet. Pigs for lard and heavily marbled meat are out of fashion, apples that don't ship well, dual purpose chickens, meat birds with dark feathers, apples for cooking only, perennial corn etc are all being lost. Heritage seed farms, backyard enthusiasts, gourmets all help keep these things alive.

I have friends who are vegetarian for a variety of reasons; religion, health, ethical reasons, don't like meat, whatever. I respect them, and I have had no grief from them about my chickens. Some people don't want to know about humanely raised food vs. regularly raised food. People who have only been around animals as pets sometimes have a hard time seeing anyone who knows an animal and then eats it as being anything but cruel. But willful ingnorance isn't something you need to address, leave them to their delusions.

Well then so many of these "minorities" need to stop insisting on being called: Latin American and even African American. The African American I bring up because I saw and AFRICAN beat the crap out of a black American for trying to call him African American because of his skin color. The African said he was not American and that black Americans need to stop calling themselves African. (this is not said to be offensive and only two minorities are listed because I am tired and they are the only ones that came to mind other than Native Americans.)
