"Animal Cruelty"

She said " thats animal cruelty"
What do you say to a person like this without offending her?

It seems to me that your friend was not very concerned about offending you .....

I'm sorry if I offended anyone with my post. I respect other peoples right to eat as they choose. I guess I was just trying to pose a theoretical question. To the point of"if certain animals loose their purpose, how many people would keep and raise them?"

Not to mention things like plowing, harrowing, or haying. Especially with modern, big, wide tractor-pulled implements or combines, as opposed to one- or two-horse drawn implements.

It can be pretty gruesome.

"The toad beneath the furrow knows / where every pointed harrow goes"... [cannot remember author]

Ask her if she refuses to take any medication at all, I mean all of you are just thinking about the meat out look about is, but what about all the items we & the veggie people enjoy like medicene, plastics even blacktop. Has anyone stop to think where all of our chemicals come from, I know they are not all from animals but alot are, just in my family we've had diabetes, & aora valve replacement, even cold capsuls & vaccine so what are we suppose to do just process the by products we need or use & throw the rest away? I mean look into other things that animals are needed for.

I tell people that if for some dumb reason we stoped all processing of animals tomorrw that we would all have to start living back in cave & start to hunt those animal with rocks & spears to feed & cloth ourselfs because there would be no by-products to be processed to create the things we take for granit in todays world. Just look around, how any people around you would be affected just from the medical care that these noble animal supply us with.

I hope I haven't rambled this topic of dis. always makes me mad

I have a close friend who often helps me with my other animals when they are sick. (30 cats and 6 dogs). I mentioned to her my plan for "laying hens and meat birds". She said " thats animal cruelty". I was taken aback at first then said "well I used to work at Purdue and it will be less traumatizing than that."
She said again "its animal cruelty".
I REALLY dont get it. Does she know where the meat in the grocery store comes from?
I really am still in shock. What do you say to a person like this without offending her?

To add she is a vegetarian BUT she does cook meat for her DH and she does eat dairy.

It's not cruel. But I would watch, with 30 cats and 6 dogs, they won't last long.

Today many (most) people are so far removed from the natural world they have no idea about where meat or animal products come from, or how they are farmed and killed, processed, etc.

Most people close their mind thinking about meat being from an animal. They just go to the supermarket and buy some pink shiny chicken breasts in a plastic wrapped bag. Meat does not even look like the animal it came from after its been cut up, and presented like that.

Every time I have friends from the UK visit me here in Thailand, I like to take them to the market to buy meat. Here the chickens are plucked and thats about it. They still have feet, legs, neck and head attacked. Everyone is shocked and does not want to eat it - why?, because it looks like a chicken!

They are horrified by the pigs heads and trotters too! If I was to ask any of them to kill and butcher on of my chickens they would not do it, but they would rather go to Mc Donnalds or Burger King. When I cook chicken feet soup, most people won't eat it. They say we don't eat this kind of stuff in the UK. Well we do! But its all mashed up and put into sausages and burgers and microwave meals.

The other issue is with eating meat that is not the norm. My friend farms rabbits, and people think its very nasty to eat a rabbit (because they are cute). So they only like to eat ugly animals lol.

Even eating cats and dogs would be fine as long as they were farmed humanely. Most people don't realise that a pig is much more intelligent than a dog - but again it does not look so cute.

Same with fish. Many people complain about farming methods for chickens and pigs, etc, but they will still eat fish, even though they are caught is huge nets, crushed under each other weight as they are hauled into the boat, then slowly suffocate to death out of the water - but again fish are not really cute....
