Animal germophobic??

When we were cleaning up after Thanksgiving this past year, we set the platter that the turkey was on, down on the floor for Moxie to lick it. (Which she did very thoroughly and with much enthusiasm!

) My SIL thought it was gross. Of course, we had to joke around that Moxie did such a good job that the platter could go right back in the cupboard...

Of course it was later washed properly in the sink with soap and hot water. We asked her why she didn't have a problem with there being a dead bird on the platter previously? Why, she even ate food from it while the carcass was still on there. She had to admit, that by that logic, the dog licks weren't really something to be concerned about.

I don't have a problem at all with dog spit. I will happily share a popsicle with her, trading licks. ( No worries, we eat fruit only popsicles, no added sugar.) Dogs have fewer mouth germs than people. What germs are there, I figure helps keep my immune system caught up to speed.
On the other hand, I use hand sanitizer frequently at work. I don't know where any of those people have been!

I think I will keep my popsicles to myself, but if the plate is finished, the dogs can have what's left as far as I am concerned. Funny how people react to things now that were really commonplace when I was growing up. Me and my best friend were covered in mosquito bites, tick bites, her little brother even bit us..lol. Now people would freak out if they saw a kid like that. We were always dirty from sliding into home plate, swinging on grapevines, riding bikes in ditches full of water, whatever we happened to find to do that day...I kinda miss the laid back simplicity of some of it. I filmed my own kids having a mud fight in the front yard!! It had rained for a solid week and they were getting cabin fever, so we put on old clothes and went and had us a mudball extravaganza right in the middle of the front yard with the neighbors looking at us like we were nuts. I figure we even ate a little mud that day at least by accident

IMO sometimes you just gotta live a little! I have rather enjoyed some of the stories on here that would make today's mom's cringe and rush their kids to the doctor

I couldn't live in fear of every germ, but that's just how I am I guess.

Too bad you can't take a bacterial culture of her mouth and the dog's mouth and compare the two. I am betting there are far less bacteria in the dog's mouth than hers. Case in point. Ever get a human bite? Talk about nasty infections!!

I trained a Service dog for Southeastern Guidedog ... its hard to get a lab to 'leave it' ... my cat ate from my bowl w/o me knowing for years and M&D never told me till he died...

My kids get dirty and play in the mud and I can't tell you how many times they have ate something right after petting the (insert animal here, chicken, dog, cat, rabbit, etc). They are heatlhy and don't get sick that much. My sister in law on the other hand does not let her kids get dirty, ever! I just wash everything before I send them home...
