Announcing the new BYC Reputation System: Ovations

I checked mine and it seems I didn't get my 10 either. I got some from the members (Thanks, guys!) Also I see "Ovation received" and "Unique Ovation" and "Unique Ovation"s total is one less than "Received"? What does "Unique Ovation" mean?

P.S. Nifty, it's time we get a "head scratching" smiley.

I wonder if it would be useful to have the ovation level reflect the % of a person's posts (since the system was started, perhaps) that receive ovations. That way someone's average degree of helpfulness is more apparent, without the frequency of their posting being as heavily weighted.

I'm sounding confusing & am not very articulate at this morning hour, but I'm thinking of something like the eBay rating system.

I do not want to bring an unwanted tinge of negativity to BYC, but I think on some posts it could help avoid serious problems from following misinformation if an "Alternate View" click or something (with similar effect as "Thumbs-Down") could be added by other knowledgeable readers, along with comments of explanation. This would be particularly helpful for posts in the Emergencies section.
People with a high # of posts or good reputations sometimes post medical advice that is less than fully correct. Based on reputation, readers may take in the info as accurate & complete without looking further or confirming elsewhere. A later post in the thread may correct the error, but readers may not spot the follow-up, & may act on the original post with bad results for their birds.
I am one of the many BYCers who specialize in collecting a lot of medical knowledge & sharing it, & am aware I am quite human & sometimes incorrect. It worries me a lot when I know a medical post may contain errors but be perceived by readers as accurate & acted on, particularly if the writer is perceived as an expert but is having a 'human weakness' moment. I would feel much more secure if other knowledgeable BYCers had the opportunity to tag more complete info directly onto the mistaken-info posts.

I also don't seem to have the bonus 10. Hope you have a way to do a database sweep and catch all the ones who are missing it, since many people will never realize that they are lacking...

OK, I just realized the problem, and it was completely my mistake!

The number that you see when you are in your profile is the # of ovations you've received, not the number of points. The number of points wasn't displaying, but it is now.

So, now if you go into your profile you should see a new row that shows the total number of ovation points

Here is a screenshot to better illustrate. In this example, Judy has had 49 people who have given her 53 reputation votes / thumbs up and the total of all this activity means she has accumulated 59 points. NOTE: Sometimes a vote may count for more than just one point, for example, if a moderator gives you an ovation it might count for more than just 1 point.

Hopefully that makes a bit more sense!

I see the 10 points now, but I still think I have been upgraded in error. I have less than 20 points, so I should be just pecking and scratching, and should not have an "egg" yet. But I'm up at the next level, getting noticed, and have one egg.

Alos, I just want to confirm - all this is private, and no one can see anyone else's overall ovation rating . . . is that correct?

I'm still confused. Shouldn't the total number of points then be 10 more than the Ovation Received number? In the Flockwatcher example you show above it is 6 more than the Ovation Received number but 10 more that the Unique Ovation number.

In my case, the Ovation Received and Unique Ovation numbers are the same, and the total points number is 3 more than that. Perhaps 3 were mods and the points counted double, but I didn't get 10, or perhaps 7 of the ovations didn't count?

Are there some areas (like some of the social areas) where ovations don't earn points? If they do earn points in places like random ramblings or games, jokes and fun, maybe you should consider not giving points there- I've seen that sort of section skew the balance in other forums.

Also does the ovation only go up for the number of unique ovation instead of just the amount of ovation? According to my ovation it goes by unique or I just can't count.
