These are my 2 mystery chicks. Straight run, bantam, random/mix bantam chick special at large hatchery. With the major winter storm that hit while in transit, I lost the other 4. Heartbreaking. But that’s 2 are doing great and now 2 weeks old. Trying to figure out possible bantam breeds. All clues and comments welcome. IMG_7457.jpeg

With the second one, it would help to know the color of its legs or to see a picture of them. It could be an old English game, a Phoenix, a Dutch bantam or an Easter egger.

The first one looks kind of chunky for a black rosecomb bantam, but that's the only thing I can think of. It could also be an Easter egger, I suppose. Guessing it is male by the bulbous comb growth.

These chicks came from Valley Hatchery. I have never done mail order before and a friend of mine had used them with good results. The Easter Egger chicks did fine, but the bantam chicks were just too fragile for the transport. I am 2 days transport time with the fastest shipping option. Then that big winter storm hit and delayed them another day and the heat packs just weren’t enough for that. I was only able to save these 2 little ones. I am a nurse by profession and raised all kinds of livestock and birds. I gave it my all, but lost 4 of the bantam chicks. I have close contact with my postmasters and have now set up a plan to go meet my next batch of chicks at the postal hub a couple hours away from me and pick up the chicks ready with a new travel brooder, fresh heat packs, food and warm water with the “911 supplement” in it. It cuts an entire day and night off the transport time.

That's too bad :( Upon looking through their breeds the black one does indeed look to be a Black Wyandotte Bantam and the chipmunk one is either a Cubalaya, Phoenix, or OEGB. Comb pictures and time will tell!
