another breed question

Bad turn of events- that rooster broke through 2 sets of fences and seriously injured one of my girls. He is still going to go live on the ranch tomorrow. Not sure if injured bird pics are allowed so I’m not posting them. I already had an avian vet appt to check out new bird so took injured bird instead. Will pass on the new hen and wait for my injured one to heal up. Very upset over the whole thing. He picked on the larger of my two- the oe game hen. It looked so bad I blamed my dog at first but another chicken friend told me to check rooster beak and he was most certainly the aggressor.

I'm not sure if you are aware of this but adding grown birds from lots of different sources like this is a really risky business. There are deadly chicken viruses which can lie dormant in a healthy looking bird for weeks, months or even years and infect your flock causing real heartache. I know this because I brought Marek's Disease into my flock this way and once you have it there is no getting rid of it. It is an incredibly common disease so don't think you would be unlucky to get it because it is more a question of being lucky not to get it and the more different places you get birds from the greater the risk. There are other less common diseases too. Marek's can even thwart the strictest of quarantine processes, so please weigh up this risk carefully when adding new birds.

It would be difficult to say if this cockerel caused the injury to your hen without seeing your set up and the hen. Adolescent cockerels can be quite rough with pullets and scalping or gashes down they flanks, under their wings, occasionally occur. Going through 2 fences sounds unlikely unless they were incredibly flimsy and in that case they were not ever going to keep predators out, so you probably need to rethink your security. Of course he may have gone over the top of the fence if it was not high enough or netted.

If you want to post a photo of the hen's injuries, it is allowed but you need to include a warning in the thread title, so edit it with something like... "WARNING GRAPHIC INJURY PHOTOS INCLUDED" or start a new thread in the Emergency Injuries and Diseases section but also include the warning in the title there too.

I think that my fences not sturdy enough do a very sad lesson learned. Will reformist.

Was expecting hen and had in a separate run and 20 feet away from littles. Gonna tighten up security for sure
