I am getting a cage for my buttons. I plan on moving them outside, simply because I have no room in the house for this cage. How can I provide heat without having 24/7 light? I thought about getting a ceramic heat 'lamp', or even using a red heat light, but the reds I don't think would work very good, and I'm thinking either one would be too much heat in the cage. The cage is 16.5" L x 22.5" W x 32" H, with 4 levels counting the floor, so as for the space requirements, I think I'm good, but the 250 watt lights would probably cook the poor things, since I would cover the cage on cold days to keep the draft out.
I was thinking of a black light bulb? How much heat would that put out? Or should I look into the heated rock type things like are used for reptiles?
Oh, and the reason I don't want them under light all the time is so I don't have eggs coming out my ears in the dead of winter! There have only been a few days below freezing, so I think they would be all right. Of course, if I notice them acting cold I'll bring them back in and just find room. I could always move my printer, since I hardly ever use it.
