Another devastating blow for L&S Chickens

Sorry about your roo. Those peafowl are gorgeous, though.

If the coon found a way to get to your chickens, he WILL be back. Get a trap of some kind or two. Time for war. The only way to deal with vermin is to exterminate it.................

I really feel your pain, this past summer my Cochin Roo was going crazy, we went out to check and didn't see anything, in the morning all we found were feathers, what ever it was got in and killed 2 of my EE's. I cried, they were the first chickens that I had, and I am 49, and only had them for 2 years. I kept a vigilant watch, tried to figure out where he came in, found a opening in the fence door and fixed it. The next morning I went out to make another run for my spring chicks that just graduated to the outside, I found blood and feathers on the fencing and went to where my 12 week old chicks were and found 2 Golden Polish, 2 Buff Cochin large, and 2 Red Frizzled Bantams gone, only one of the Frizzled who was dear to me since I had to keep her in the heat box longer, and 1 cochin were left to find, all that was left of the others were feathers. I sat right down in the pen and cried:hit. So I pulled my 49 year self together and bought a big trap and I set it, I caught 5 Raccoons, 2 skunks, 1 Possum, and 1 Rabbit, and 1 cat. I let the rabbit and cat go. Please, please don't give up on your passion. My chickens are my sanity. Your Rooster was a very beautiful boy. I pray that you will get an off spring.

We have had the roofs collapse on 2 of our chicken pens due to snow. The raccoon killed 5 hens after I relocated most of my chickens into one big pen till we could fix the two ruined ones. It chewed right through the chicken wire. The coon severely injured my EE roo and he will no longer be used as a breeder because of that. And now it found a way into my safest pen and killed Wellington.
I have spent all day and a lot more money to re-enforce all the cages. My chicken hating husband is not amused.

I have tried to trap this stinking coon several times. He just ignores the trap. I set it again any way tonight.
I hate chickens.

Hey Shellie,

I just happened to come across this post. Man am I sorry to hear you lost Wellington. Having seen him in person, I can speak to the fact that he was one nice looking bird. Very nice!

Try marshmellows in the trap. That's how I got my coons. I've also read that you can try rat poison in Pepsi and they love that. They'll go off and die somewhere though. I prefer the trap and then, as you already know, I get an extra satisfaction from having them in a stew or chili.

Really sorry to hear about you losing him. I hope you get some eggs to hatch that he sired.

You can be sure that potlicker will be back. Try the marshmellows and maybe even throw some of what he left behind in the trap too. They're smart, that's for sure, but you can catch him in the trap.

God Bless,

I put my trap next to the coop, covered it up so just the entrance was opened, used apples, meat, chicken parts, black oiled sunflower seeds, and I trapped the bad boys. They are a funny critter, they usually don't come back every night, but he will come back.
