Another dog attack -,-

I disagree with poison. Too many unintended victims. I also don't like to call Animal Control. In my experience, all they do is rent you a trap and (and this has happened--I saw it) go to the owner and pocket cash in exchange for not taking the animal to the pound and following those procedures. So, you have to decide for yourself what you are able to do: Can you buy a trap, trap it and then dispose of it? Can you shoot it, without causing undue trauma and/or damaging nearby properties? Can you install better barriers? Stating the obvious, yes, it is the owners responsibility but so what? They don't behave like responsible pet owners. Be careful that you don't anger someone who will then try to get revenge. (Really, a responsible pet owner is one you don't have to worry with; it's the irresponsible ones that will come back to haunt you). You'd be surprised at what Animal Control will do to you--if I shoot my pet they can charge me with animal cruelty, but it's okay to take it to the vet to put it down (kaching). Do what you feel comfortable doing and keep it on the quiet.

I was posting in reply to Jak who lives in Thailand. Not sure they have an Animal Control dept there. Normally I don't suggest poison (I would just shoot the wild dogs if they visited my coop over and over and was told by the sheriff to do so for any dogs who attacked my chickens) but of course there should be precautions if you used poison. I put poison in a cage so nothing else gets it but the mice. If it could be placed out only when the dogs normally show up in Jak's case, otherwise poison would not be a good choice, I agree, unless you are sure other animals would not be passing by in the daytime. Obviously night time is a different situation.

I would set some poison chicken right outside my fence. Who is going to tell them if you bury the evidence? That's an invasion of your rights, it seems to me, to allow the dogs to terrorize you and your property.
Its all part of the 'fun' of living here.

But I am getting close to dong something like that.... but keep holding back fearing some revenge... I would hate someone to throw some poison over my fence and kill me pet dog or birds.

Time to start killing a dog sounds like to me! I'd probably figure out who's dog is doing it, get proof that the dog is doing it, then charge them for the birds. If that doesn't work either kill the dog or take it to the humain shelter.
I never go and complain about someone elses dogs anymore. Because soon as something happens to the dog like it ran away, got hit by a car, etc... Never returned so since you complained you are responsible.that what happened to me i went and complained she said her dog did not do that. And a week later another neighbor 2 blocks away killed the dog and i got blamed, had a mccoy hatfields scenrio goin on for awhile.

I have to agree with you on that one.

I find most people who keep lots of dogs in bad conditions will be rather crazy people and will not listen to other human beings about how to keep the dogs better or about complaints.

They are the kind of people who always say things like.... I love dogs more than people etc.

My last neighbour was a dog hoarder and over several years collected about 15 dogs of all sizes in her small house. Most were kept locked in cages or bathrooms and her house was full of dog poop and stank when you walked past on the street. Her dogs kept dyeing and she kept getting more... they fought and had wounds.. she never walked them or let them out of the small yard and the noise was terrible.

Once one got out and attacked an old lady a few houses down the street and bit her leg badly.

I suggested to her ways to keep the dogs barking noise down and she and her husband went crazy at me in the street... she was screaming and crying and kneeling on the floor and he was shouting at me. it was very disturbing. After that she said if anything happened to her dogs she would kill me!

She said she loved her dogs more than her daughter (who did not know where her mother was not living).

After that we actually sold our house and moved away.

Now it seems a similar thing is brewing here with the village dogs and the neighbour seems to be getting more dogs which are just kept of a rope in the back yard 24 / 7... barking.

I have not complained to her.... I will take action myself when I finally can not stand it any more.

Also, please check with your local and state laws some states like Texas prohibit the killing of dogs and cats that are not owned by you and do not accept any feral/stray accusations. The reason they do this is because there is a shelter for cats and dogs and they want us to be humane. Its a pretty big fine here and you can be charged with a felony. Thats why I never complain and mums the word.

SSS is the answer to dog problems.

What is SSS?

I'm up to here with the pitbull and his idiot owners next door! When their dog dug under the fence for the 2nd time I showed them the blood running down my arms (he drug me 20 ft holding onto his collar!) and my poor hen, all I got in response was if I hurt their dog he would shoot me.

She is the landlords niece so he won't do squat though I have saved text messages detailing the attacks, the dead hen and my injuries. He can't claim ignorance if I get bloodied again and he has been warned of his liability letting her keep the dog.

I just wish I could afford to move!

So any suggestions are welcome!

we had an issue with a neglecting owner of two dogs. just open the door and let em run. we spoke to them about it before the chicks came, well no darn good it did. the trouble maker of the two went through a portable electric fence and tried to get inside coop but couldn't thankfully. Hubby came home and caught him at it, so he could run him off only then. Spoke again to owner and then made shotgun shells full of rock salt. we never got to use them though, lil bugger went out and found a dead deer instead and the owners watched him more after that. Thank goodness they moved shortly after. New neighbors have 3 dogs and she knows me and her dogs stay away but she knows if one would get my birds we will have major issues. SSS

Had to chuckle at the rock salt shotgun shells. We had an issue with a pig and cow duo where we once lived. Neighborhood kids would tear boards off the fence for a treehouse, the duo would get out and ruin our garden until the owner fixed the fence. This happened over and over again, until the last time. We loaded a 12 guage with rock salt and dried beans, one shot and away they went. Later that week, DH saw the cow dead in the busy road nearby, hit by a car. Owner had to pay damages to the car because he didn't contain his livestock. Never saw the pig again. This duo would terrorize the kids walking home from the bus stop, good thing no one ever got hurt. And, yes, the kids tearing down the fence were at fault, too, but with terrible parents what can you do? And the parents were Tenn state troopers. Had little terrors for kids.
