ANOTHER failed hatch

pips&peeps :

First off, where we live here in the great State of WA, I do not recommend any type of styrofoam incubator. I used one for two years, hatched around 8 chicks and threw it away.

I got a cabinet style incubator and after the first couple of hatches, got it figured out and don't have any problems now. I probably hatch over 500 chicks per year.

Also get rid of the wet pine shavings use water with oxine for humidity.

It is my understanding that she is using a cabinet incubator she built.

I am attempting my first hatch on shipped eggs and I have never hatched before at all....got my first chicks when I went to pick up a bunny at a local farm after the neighbors dog ate her bunny in frount of her...fortunately at 3 she did not quite understand....but we have 8 chicks and 6 layers and 2 JR hens eggers soon..and a hen that now crows so I assume I have a rooster....anyway I had some eggs that seemed unfertile, then had several that arrested at about day 14-15 and am starting day 22 no pips but I do definately have movement with live chicks in at least some of the eggs, but may have lost a couple of more as I can not see movement...but these are dark eggs. I too had green fluid in the egg I opened, but smelled a bit bad but not horrible, haven't opened anyone else....equipment was new.... 2 LG forced air, checked temps with 4 thermometers agreement within 1 degree! I use one to hatch, one to incubate....but no chicks yet! mary

Hi! I'd suggest sterilizing everything and tryng your LG hatcher set-up again, just NOT using shavings.
Try sterile sponges, athletic socks, or just water and at least try to isolate the shavings as the problem before you change the rest of the set-up.

Good luck!

From a diagnostic standpoint, I would like to hear what her homemade bator is made out of. There are certain woods, glues, finishes, paints, plastics, etc that could cause problems. I think this needs to be analyzed from the start. A pic would be wonderful I think so we can see what she has and maybe get a better idea.

Think your problem, has to be in the home made incubator. Proper air flow? Why not water pans? Yes get rid of the wood shavings. You have an Auto turner?
Need fresh air without dropping the humidity. Make sure eggs are getting good air flow around each egg.
My guess from reading all your post. To low of humidity the last few day.(need to check not guess). Lack of fresh air. Or like someone said something this incubator is made from.

I used pine shavings for humidity in the hatching boxes that I made. These go inside the cabinet bator. I have a plain pan of water for humidity for the whole bator. I was just trying the pine shavings hoping that they would hold water like a sponge but also wick moisture out for high humidity. A while back, Mergmet told me to use paper towels inside of cottage cheese containers to wick moisture into the air for day 18-21 inside the LG. So I was just experimenting briefly with the pine shavings. I decided as of a few days ago that I don't like using pine shavings.

The homemade bator is made of a metal filing cabinet.
