Another Good Reason for a Rooster Story

I have a small flock of six. Five pullets and one Silkie Cockerel. I didn't want a rooster because of the noise but we've all fallen for him hard. He's such a funny guy and so handsome. In any case, he is only 14 weeks old and already protecting his young ladies.

I heard some REALLY loud squawking out the window. A sound I've never heard these guys make before. I saw all five of the girls up on top of their shade shelter and staring over to the corner of the run. I couldn't see Bert but boy could I hear him. So I walked out to see what his problem was and in the woods was a big black cat stalking them. I ran in the woods like a crazy woman to scare the cat away and then checked everyone out. They were a little freaked but everyone was fine.

Now I know it wasn't a big scary hawk or a fox or something but I am still very proud that my little 14 week old boy took care of his girls like that. He keeps giving me new reasons to want to keep him around for good!

Remember, Silkies are evil. It was probably all a set up. He paid the cat to pretend he was stalking the hens so he could look like a hero. Those darn Silkies! You just can't trust 'em!

Gooo Rooo Gooo!!!

My little BA Roo is about 9-10 weeks old. Yesterday I was caught in the coop when a rain storm hit hard and fast. I had my mini daschund with me. That roo got my Lulu several times! Then a black sex-link hen started in on her, and kept cornering her, and pecking her! I had to save the dog!! Of course the mini grew up with the chicks, and even tried to get the chicks to nurse when they were a few days old! What a sight.

Anyway... What a Guy!!

All right, Bert! I've got chicks in the brooder and this certainly reinforces my thoughts of keeping one roo out of the bunch.
