another idiot dog owner

Ditto about the neutral thing. I don't have my dogs on leash while on my property and they chase things all the time.

My dogs will not go off leash when walking the property, but Beast is never off leash

He's got a high prey drive and about two years worth of guard/attack training. No way I want to risk having him loose...... but thats because he's a working dog and not a family pet per se. Now a family pet off leash on property that's large enough to be at least quarter mile away from the house? I might let him off, but only if I had no neighbors, the dog didn't have prey drive, and was thoroughly trained.

are you kidding me !!! on his own property you think he needs to leash his dog..thats crazy!!! he should have had a better recall on the dog and that would have prevented this problem..but most farm dogs are just that,on the farm to run off any intruders and their obedience is at best "limited"..

Ceila, my hunter's hound, is never on leash unless off property. She like to chase things but that's it, no harm done. Now for Pearl, she is chained up for now on. She has a high prey drive and love the garbage. After we rehomed the pups, hubby chained her up. She has jumped into the trash trailor and destroyed every bag that was in there and spreaded it all over the place, she also killed our chicks and been killing the neighbor's chickens. No way are we allowing her free roaming. Only thing I have seen Ceila kill was snakes and mice, which is GOOD!

keep those harmful pests away and have the area more safe for the kids. Oh, she did kill a opossum the other day (hubby saw it) but it was in our front yard. She keeps the critters out of the yard, but other then that, nothing. She has saved my neighbor's goats from a snake before as well.

Over there roos are considered pests maybe the dog was trained to chase them away and it happended so fast the owner didn't have time to react. devils advocate

My Mom is on 80 acres. Before she had sheep up there I'd take my dogs (this is when they were puppies) to go run. It was used as training cause I'd take treats and call them to me. Not only was a chance for them to run their puppies legs, but a chance to work on "come" off leash and from a great distance. I see no problem with letting dogs run, they need to exercise! It does need to be in an area where they won't get into/cause any trouble. Dogs need to be trained to be called back when they get to chasing something but they need to be trained to come before you work on it off leash.

I think to OP's point was there was a lack of training in the pup's owner.

When we had Collies, all of them are trained to commands and we did walk them without leash on a 4 acre farm fields. Once we step foot on a roadway, or traffic, leashes are all on.

Kangaroo vs dogs do not mix LOL! Those Roos are very powerful with their hind legs and the claws are capable of disboweling a human or dog. Better have a gun next time a MAD roo comes along. Fire up the BBQ pit!
