Another limping duck

I am going to try and locate some dmso gel today. Does the b complex have enough vit b or do I need a different supplement?? Also, im wondering about selenium with vit E, do I just sprinkle that on their food?? And I was also wondering about durvets poultry power. I started using it last week, and ever since I have had hurt birds, just a coincidence???

I agree with everyone saying its probably a small sprain, one of my ducks tripped out of the coop the other day and limped for a few days and is now fine. i live in vermont too! ready for winter?! not me!

Ok, I still am unsure of the purpose of selenium and vitamin e, I wasn't sure if it was something they should have everyday or just for certain situations. And the poultry power is made by Durvet, I can get a pic of it and the exact dosage when I get home. I have been giving 2 ml of durvet b complex in a 1/4 watermelon every other day, and that gets distributed to all the birds, should I dose her directly???

Here is the poultry power, I give them ¹/2 oz every 4 cups of food

If you have the money, and time to get x-rays done on her, for it, but I'm going to "lean" on the side, that she likely has a sprain of sorts. Really all depends on the severity of the injuries too, I've had birds limp for two weeks, other for one day. It will usually resolve itself after time.

But, if you want to help "speed" the healing process, you may look into adding B vitamins to her diet to support healthy bone structure and growth, or to relieve inflammation and swelling soaking her in Epsom salt water. DMSO gel, is something I use to for lame birds, it helps reduce swelling, and inflammation, and provides several other benefits. You can get this as most feed or pet stores, I use the gel and slather it on their leg as needed.

Hi @Isaac 0 !
I have a slightly limping duck right now too. One of my 4mo old female runners has been limping for about 3-4 days. Is the DMSO safe to rub on her and put her to bed with the others? Will they try and eat it or will it be harmful if it gets on their bedding?
Thank you!

Hi!

This is how I do it.

Grab a pair of rubber gloves, dab a bit of the DMSO onto the glove, and slather the gel onto her leg. The coating will be clear, and light enough the other ducks won't even see it, nor is it a problem if it gets on their bedding.

I was surprised myself how fast the DMSO gel absorbed into their skin and was completely dry in a few minutes.

Thank you! And thank you also to @416bigbore

I know they have this in stock at my farm store, so I’m excited to try it!

@ducksinvt
If you don’t have one get a dog pen, ours is about 3’ tall and makes a 6 ish foot diameter circle when set up, it was a lifesaver with the dog when she was young, it’s been great with the ducks, I can isolate one without keeping them apart from the rest, often I look out and see 7 ducks laying around the one in the cage snoozing. Slows them down but makes for less stress on everyone. Best 70-80 bucks you can spend.
