Another missing Child in Missouri

Quote:
When I was a child we had a meeting in our neighborhood with a cop. Turns out there was a boy down the street who was asked to approach a van to look at a picture of a puppy. They grabbed his shirt and tried pulling him in. Thank goodness the boy got free and ran screaming to his house. We then had a neighborhood meeting in a garage. They played videos about how we should use a code word like you mentioned. My mom made ours "star" becaue that was our school mascot. We never had to use it though..

When I was a kid we all had to be on the lookout for a blue van that was abducting children. We had to take a buddy to the bathroom, and we weren't allowed to hang out during lunch or recess anywhere near the playground gates. We had speakers come talk to us about it and warn us not to ever approach a vehicle or talk to a stranger. It seems like in the early 90's child abduction was all over the place. Posters and kids on milk cartons everywhere. My sister and I still had to walk to and from school though, as there was no bus and our mom had to work. We were smart independent kids though and knew better than to take short cuts, get separated, and talk to strangers. One time we thought a man was following us and we ran to a friend's house that was nearby. We were always on the lookout for the man in the blue van.

That's what bugs me about the attempted child abduction in the other little girl, Somer's, neighborhood, before she went missing. When that happened, every parent and child should have been warned and on red alert. The children would most likely have not separated if they had known.

Just aweful!!! I feel so bad for her parents.

I grew up in a NYC neighborhood and I don't remember this happening much. I think that, unfortunately, this has probably always been going on. We just have more media and cable now so we hear about it more. Back when I was a kid there was no cable and we had 7 TV channels. I miss those "sheltered" days.
