We have always used color bands on the mature birds to tell what group they are from, but now I want to be able to identify specific birds based on pedigrees. If I wait until they are older to put leg bands on there could be some confusion. I saw wing tags in a catalog. Do they work well? I know the brass tags we use in our lambs often fall out as they grow.

What is the best way to ID chickens. I would prefer to be able to do something before they leave the brooder.

Thanks!

I use Spiral Breeding techniques, so I have to ID chicks even before they mingle with other clutches. I have certain toenails removed immediately, in conformation to the Spiral:
All chicks from Line A have they're Leftmost toenail removed...
Chicks from Line B have middle toenail removed...
Chicks from Line C have their right toenail removed...
This doesn't effect the way they walk, tho' I'm told it's a pathetic showing disqualification.
